That's the trouble with being in a "weak group". If you win, there's no glory, and if you cock it up in any way, you're a complete laughing stock

A stronger group would have been better, imho

I have to agree - as usual the pre-match hysteria about "the best English group since The Beatles" is starting to take over...
Anyone remember our "Golden Generation" from the last World Cup? We didn't exactly cover ourselves in glory against Sweden, Paraguay & Trinidad/Tobago...

If they get to the quarter-finals, they'll definitely have paid their way, and realistically one can be happy with it. Anything less, the press will savage them, and they'll be looking for excuses -- predictably, people will say "But I thought they said player xxxxxx was 'world class', so why was he such a banker?"

Something tells me that Fabio Capello won't stand any nonsense-he won't allow the WAG's to destroy our chances this time and take the emphasis off the main event or the players. It was incredible bad luck for Jimmy Bullard, from Hull was injured yesterday-I reckon he would have had(and may well still do) good chance of making the England squad. It wasn't helpful that two of our strikers for their clubs missed penalties, I am not sure my blood pressure could cope with yet more penalty shoot-outs so we have to absolutely sure that we are ready. My only concern is these useless friendlies we play-one next May is Egypt(but thats only to get their vote for 2018) and if anyone of the players is injured it could be curtains without even kicking a ball on South African soil. Capello is no fool, he is also no McLaren or Eriksson, and I believe if all goes well we will have a realistic chance of getting through comfortably...watch this space.

Default Amanda Knox

Here we go again. Unbelievable. The similarities between her case and the O.J. case are rather obvious, are they not? In each case the prosecution was strong, the DNA evidence clear. And yet, now everybody is up in arms, alleging anti-Americanism and questioning the fairness of the Italian courts. Jesus. I mean, clearly the woman is narcissistic and disturbed. As if O.J. wasn't enough, they want to see someone else who stabbed a poor innocent to death simply go free.

Of course we don't know the real truth but it's treading on dodgy territory having a go at other countries judicial systems like Amanda Knox's father did. It was understandable given the emotional state he would have been in as everyone thinks their family member's are innocent.
Hiowever, if you look at high profile cases like Rodney King and OJ and no doubt many others that have not been as well reported the US Justice system is just as culpable as the Italians, the British or anyone else's. At least we have juries of our peers (for now!!!!) and our lawyers have the chance to put arguments forward, something we take for granted now.

I wondered when someone was going to mention this one.

Ms Knox and Signor Solecito have been convicted by a jury who had lots of time and lots to ponder on. At the rate of two hearing days per week, the Italians courts can hardly be accused of rushing the process. I can't see any evidence that it wasn't a fair trial, but it should not have taken nearly a year. Ultimately the jury were in the room and I wasn't so their verdict has far more authority than my opinion.

Fact is, Ms Knox is young and pretty and it seems a dreadful pity that she must lose all the best years of her life in an Italian prison. I don't take any satisfaction from seeing her life going down the drain. But if Ms Knox is guilty then she must take her punishment, no matter how harsh it is because all of Meredith Kercher's life is gone and nothing can be done to remedy that.

I reasoned it this way, either she did it, or he did it, or they both did it-as it happened I always thought she was guilty because her whole manner betrayed her-she was too relaxed in front of the cameras, kissing her boyfriend like she did didn't help either and as there were only two possible suspects it was odds on she did it with or without his help. The true nature and reason why might not be known but justice has been done and no amount of money or commiseration can take the fact away from the Kercher family that they have lost a loved one and nothing can bring her back.

On a lighter note I have just created a Christmas thread-feel free to add to it as you fancy.

Whether she's guilty or not I don't know but I don't think she got a fair trial by British or American standards ; the DNA evidence was anything but conclusive for a start and the "confession" was slapped out of her by a policewoman . Members of the jury were reported to be sleeping at times during the trial.

I think her biggest mistake was to be American - at last the surrender monkeys have got their revenge.
