In no particular order, I simply couldn't decide who is better then who... I've limited myself to 5 authors, else I'll end up posting an essay.
Robert A Heinlein Isaac Asimov Ray Bradbury Philp K Dick Larry Niven I think Heinlein is one of my consistent favourites, I don't think he's ever written anything I haven't thought of as a classic. Top 5 Sci-fi Movies... Star Wars Blade Runner Close Encounters of the Third Kind Stalker (Tarkovsky's) Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (mad, mad, mad) Ask me about the movies in ten minutes and my opinion will be different though...

I am a bit of a Trekkie, Classic Trek only though really. REAL sci-fi TV has walls that wobble as far as I'm concerned, plus Shatner is a GOD... So wonderfully cheesy. I irritate friends by calling him "The true king of rock" and insisting they listen to his rendition of "Rocket Man"...
I know... I'm sorry, I'll probably go to hell for doing that.

The paranoia ideology is thick within all sci-fi authors, American in particular and they write the books and make the paranoia films very well, in comparison with the Eastern ideas, like the works by Lem, where science fiction is used more as a protest against the state.
In terms of films, it's really difficult, but these do have very fond memories for me: 2001, A Space Odyssey, (best film of any kind ever made?) The Thing Invasion of the Body Snatchers, (what, oh what a great film!) Planet of the Apes, (nothing prepared me for the ending and I still find it shocking) Solaris (the Tarkovsky original, as mentioned by Sohtatexa above) But, I've really left out so many films!!! First Man on the Moon Dark City Alien The Day The earth Stood Still (a personal favorite) Back to the Future so many! |

I'm a big fan of Carpenter, but I completely agree with you (and so would he I think) on everything you just said.
The BIG PROBLEM with most modern Sci-Fi TV and Movies (IMHO) is that they are afraid of being cheesy and slightly ludicrous, and that seems kind of silly to me. Once they take themselves seriously (Star Trek: Next Gen... BIG offender on this) they lose their charm. Too much emphasis on "good" (or their interpretation of the word) and not enough emphasis on "entertaining" I think...

CLASSIC...
Seriously. I've seen the remake trailer and its better then you'd expect, though I'm still (understandably I think) rather sceptical that it'll be good. It DOES have Jennifer Connelly in it though, so I'll be watching just for her... Gorgeous, thats what she is...

I always find that Roland Emmerich tries too hard to show the "big picture" and sometimes loses the small, incidental points that makes his characters "live". I like his stuff though (for the most part), but his earlier ones (Noah's Arc Principle in particular) I thought expressed what you're saying much better then his later ones.
I've always thought the extended print of The Abyss did it very well, the viewer doesn't see the implications of everything until its too late. Forbidden Planet does a similar thing as well I think, the ID monster that comes from Morbius's desire for solitude; a tiny subconscious desire that can destroy the world he loves so dearly. Uh oh... I'm beginning to sound like a critic. I better shut up... (I tend to gibber when people talk movies to me. Sorry. I'm a movie nut.)
