HG Wells,
Harry Harrison: Stainless steel Rat series is brilliant.
Douglas Adams: Hitch Hiker guide series is classic.

Dont read much but the above three i read all the time.

I still read the stuff on and off, so I've not limited my list to books I read in the 70s.

Greg Bear - earlier stuff before he started writing technothrillers
Robert Charles Wilson
Olaf Stapledon
Stanislaw Lem
Cordwainer Smith

Michael Moorcock was a mate of the owner and turned up there once or twice.

Don't forget to remember the man who during the 50s and 60s made sci-fi and fantasy visible: Ray Harryhausen.
Without his preliminary work Alien, Jurassic Park, and 2001 - Space Odyssey wouldn't have been realized.
