While waiting, I reached over to grab a magazine to read, knew damn well not to grab the Playboys. Can't recall what I picked, "Police Gazette" may have been too old, but the barber raced over and took it out of my hands and placed it on the rack at the far end of the shop - that's where the smokers sat - so it was the "older" crowd. Whatever it was it likely had some lurid title like "Our hero aces in Vietnam" that I wanted to read - not realizing June Palmer or Jennie Lee might be inside as well. But I know I saw Playboy there on the back racks.

Agreed! I didn't see her centerfold until 1975, when I was 14. I was in a bookstore and was sneakily peeking at a book on nude photography, and there she was. It was almost enough to make me want to buy the book (which cost $25, a small fortune for a teenager in those days.)

I had seen plenty of Playboys before but the first one I bought for myself was June 1986 and Kathy Shower then became my first Playmate crush.

I can also confirm that PB was available at local Barber Shops here in the 70s. They were just put in the top rack and kids knew they were off limits. Back then we did this strange thing called "respecting our elders".
