Many thanks for these, and also the Martin Pyx books.
But is there some mistake with "Bare Bottomed at Birchwell" (1962)?
The file seems to contain one of the Bared Affair issues.

Default Horntip

The books in this archive are mostly bawdy drinking songs, but there's a fair collection of Victorian and Edwardian erotica there too.
It's not easy to navigate, but these links should start you off.

There is no mistake. "Bare Bottomed at Birchwell" is the third part of the Lorna Jane trilogy, published in various issues of Bared Affair.

Default My Secret Life

"My Secret Life is the longest erotic autobiography ever written. Penned anonymously during the 1800s by a wealthy English gentleman called Walter, it offers an eye and thigh opening account of life behind closed doors in the Victorian era. Banned from publication for its extreme and explicit content for nearly a century, My Secret Life has now come to life in the 21st century as an immersive audio book, narrated and scored by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins."

With text and lovingly-produced audio-book files. Quite a few of the free excerpts now sadly missing.

The file seems to contain one of the Bared Affair issues.
All were originally found in the same places, seem to have been edited and written by the same people. “Roger Benson” was — and still is- quite cranky about reuse of his illustrations by others, but he was fine with them on Bared Affair, which seems to have come to an end circa 2005 with the passing of the “editrix”

Benson still posts on DeviantArt; he has the rather aromatic handle of “bilgepot”— seems to be the same guy

My early teens were made so much more enjoyable by getting my hands on a reissued paperback copy of The Pearl, which focussed largely on large amounts of "rogering quim" type stories. I still have it, much thumbed.
I have now acquired its sequels, plus Man with a Maid et al, though I'm amazed at how much spanking these Victorian ladies can take, and freely admit I prefer rogering a rear, to smacking it.

I have also wondered about this. The names and some of the set pieces are very similar. I wondered whether the 1905 date for "Birch in the Boudoir" was right, but it seems to be. If it is, then yes its clearly an inspiration for Manton (whose true identity remains unknown, so far as I know).

Birch in the Boudoir is sometimes ascribed to Hugues Rebell.

Manton edited a volume in the early 1980s "Victorians in the Harem: Grove Press Victorian Library"

Quote:
Richard Manton is well known for his compilations of extracts from Victorian erotic literature, and often also for confusing (even dubious) re-issuing of some of the original works under duplicate titles. This book is one of his best efforts, and in it he draws together the parts of this body of literature that relates to slavery and particularly harems, whether in the USA, UK or the Near-East. He shows that writings in this part of the genre, although still generated with erotic intent, can give clues about such aspects of life that complement the known facts, fleshing out the bare bones of history. Most of the book seems to be written by Manton, with illustrative extracts from the literature which, for once, complement rather than dominate the narrative. Several sources add to this study, and the result manages to be quite erotic itself, although also scholarly in perhaps a lightweight manner. Definitely outside the normal run of Grove Press titles that ably represented this genre in the 1980s.
The correspondence and business papers of the founder of Grove Press, Barney Rosset are now at Syracuse University. Scholars are more interested in Rosset's literary giants -- Beckett, Ionescu, William Burroughs-- but presumably correspondence with Manton is in there too.

An interesting project for someone who's near enough to Syracuse to examine these files and look for correspondence with his erotic authors.
