I am probably wrong, but it was my understanding that the original ending as per the novel was filmed by Howard Hawks, but changed at the studio's insistence.

Eldorado,Pretty well indentical to Rio Bravo,but I prefer it if only for Robert Mitchum's performance as the drunken sherriff.
