Oz doesn't want the burdens of, say, Somalia.

I don't blame them.

While I have sympathy for the Somalis, I don't want their customs or their politics in the US, and I think it's similar down under. There have been a series of gruesome cases involving female genital mutilation and the burden for Australia of trying to acculturate people whose cultural norms are so very different is producing resentment.

And while there's lots of space in Australia, the pleasant bits where everyone wants to live are actually pretty crowded. There's plenty of space in, say, Birdsville (and I suppose it resembles Somalia) -- but not many people want to live there.

Australia is welcoming for skilled immigrants, but let's face it, the planet has at least a billion desperately poor people who'd -- quite logically-- do anything to get into a first world nation with a generous social welfare system.

Friends of a friend of mine migrated via a plane as tourists 25 years ago and got deported 2 years ago when finally found out by the department of immigration - they had 2 teenage kids who were entitled to stay because they born in Australia but their parents werent - bizarre situation

There are no perfect solutions in a world which is over populated

We in the land of the lucky have low unemployment but if you dig deeper you'll find the 5-7% unemployment which includes people who only work 1 hour a week is closer to 15-20% when you include the under employed who are only surviving because of welfare hand outs.

Actually, it's not surprising. Welfare regimes just about everywhere can be miserable. And then people complain when you actually qualify for something, like it was free riches

The only way to get rich on welfare is to claim for 100 kids you don't have. But sooner or later...

There was something of a welfare 'crackdown' not that long ago. Many single mothers were reduced (financially) to a 'new start' (unemployment) allowance, apparently.

What buttsie hinted at about before about falsified unemployment figures is, i fear true. There are many too asset rich to recieve a pension and retirement ages for those working rose around the same time.
An aquaintance of mine who was confined to a wheelchair due to motorcycle accident around 30 years ago found his pension, his only means of support, 'cut off' when the value of his property was re-evaluated.
