The most embarrasing moment I had buying porn (or what passed for porn in the UK in those days) at a newsagents occurred when I gingerly tendered to the bloke behind the till a copy of "Whitehouse".

I vividly recall that it had the highly sexy, totally fuckable Rosemary England on the front cover wearing a sparkling greeny-coloured body stocking type of thing, so it must've been circa 1978 / 1979, which would make me 15 / 16 at the time (I was very tall for my age though, so I could more often than not pass for 18 when the need arose).

Anyway, there I was standing with my mag at the counter trying to look all cool and casual, when this bossy, overweight woman of about 60 who was standing behind me in the queue stepped forward to the till and shouted (for the benefit of the entire shop) "THE ONLY PLACE FOR THAT SORT OF FILTH IS IN THE DUSTBIN - YOU OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, IT'S ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING ..." (blah blah).

Her tirade continued as the bemused shopkeeper took my cash and popped my purchase into the obligatory brown paper bag. All eyes were then on me (with a variety of glances from expressing various emotions ranging from amusement to disgust) as I scuttled mortified out of the shop and headed back up Sheffield's London Road pretty damn sharpish, putting as much distance between myself and that shop as quickly as possible (I never went back there either, after that).

So yes - the young 'uns of today don't know they're born. All that smut at the click of a mouse - and all in the privacy of your own four walls.

A far cry from "our day", when virtually the only way to get your eager mits on some decent wanking material was to head for bricks and mortar stores and risk any number of potential sources of extreme embarrassment (being turned away for not being 18 / sexy bird at the till / bumping into someone your parents knew or from school or college / interfering old busybodies giving you lectures in the queue / disapproving stares from prim old ladies etc. etc.).

And yet at the same time, those days were somehow more fun, and the sense of satisfaction upon acquiring some brand new smut much greater. And of course (as stated by the poster above), most of the models back then were far, far sexier and much more "relatable-to" for the average bloke than the airbrushed, silicone-enhanced and of-a-muchness Barbie dolls who inhabit much of today's porn.

Absolutely agree with Kiwi, we are ALL spoilt, and Im not sure its a good thing either for the 'yoof of today' or us. That special rush of a new nudie mag, the innocence of getting turned on by a copy of - by todays standards - a soft core top shelf mag, crikey I even used to get turned on by P3! Nowadays if its not three fellas poking every orifice the young men I work with don't even consider it to be porn. Teenagers seem to think the sameway when it comes to their sex lives, what was once a special experience is now considered the minimum. Sounding like my dad now, but if it comes too easy it's not worth having, it has no value! I chortled heartily when I read the bit you wrote about selecting an anonymous newsagents: Besides the one on London Road in Sheffield (see my musings a few posts up), I also had a couple of others from which I regularly used to source my smut, both of which involved a lengthy bus ride from where I lived on the outskirts of Sheffield into the city centre, followed by either another bus ride out or a 30-minute hike.

Occasionally I'd use one of the newsagents in or around Sheffield city centre's "Hole In The Road" (which no longer exists), but there you always ran the risk of bumping into someone you knew, besides which they were usually heaving. These I usually resorted to for the more spontaneous buys to which you allude - like when I'd seen a particulary cock-stirring cover on the top shelf, and just had to have the mag in question there and then, my desperate need to bash my bishop over the filly in question overriding all concerns about embarassment.

You hit the nail on the head about the meticulous planning as well. Porn-buying forays would be planned with almost military precision and attention to detail. I also used to try and combine mine with a trip into town when I needed to buy something else like a pair of jeans. That way, I'd have a big "legitimate" bag in which I could conceal my mag (or mags) right at the bottom, buried well out of sight.

Not only did this make it far easier to smuggle my smut into the house past my folks once I got home, it also made the subsequent walk back through town and the bus ride home far more comfortable as there'd then be no need to hide a big paper bag full of porn under your shirt & coat and tucked into the waistband of your strides, just in case you bumped into anyone you knew.

Aaaah the good old days....

I was spoiled for choice without the Internet!

1. Certain pages from the "Mind Alive" encyclopedia in weekly parts - mainly those featuring artistic representations of ladies without clothes painted by dirty Frenchmen - "Dejeuner sur Herbes" springs to mind.

2. The Daily Telegraph and Observer colour supplements - the "Fly me" ads, Courvoisier and others, not to mention that once in a lifetime occurrence with the DT where they featured pictures from David Hamilton's "Dreams of young girls" which is probably somewhat illegal these days.

3. Littlewoods, Freemans, Marshall Wards catalogues - we all know what pages !

4. Radio Times and TV Times, particularly the Christmas double issues which were pretty much guaranteed to have several wankworthy pictures.

5. Various TV programmes - generally "daytime TV" as it existed at that time because it would have been slightly awkward to knock one out over Anne Aston whilst sat next to Mum and Dad in the front room. Play School was quite rewarding with saucily miniskirted Julie Stevens ( Carry on Cleo) not to mention another unbelievable occasion where the randy cameraman spent most of the programme pointed up Toni Arthur's carelessly open legs - I saw the 11am broadcast on BBC2 and was very sore by the time the afternnon repeat on BBC1 had finished. Wimbledon fortnight was always worthwhile, having a quickie over Evonne Goolagong's frilly panties or Chris Evert's not so frilly ones, before service changed and you had to endure several tortuous upskirt minutes of Billy-Jean King.

6. Mum's Vogue and Simplicity dressmaking pattern catalogues especially the "Young Miss" pages on the Spring/Summer editions.

Thanks for a great thread. I remember trying not to buy two mags from the same shop within the same month. And I'd wait for the shop to be empty before grabbing the mag and going to the counter!

In Belfast there is a market area called Smithfield. It was destroyed during the troubles, but it still to this day has second hand book shops that sell porn mags. When I was a teenager I discovered to my delight that the proprietors of these shops (middle aged men) had no probs with selling porn to us school boys. They had all the the top shelf stuff plus under the counter stuff as well. Once they got to know you they would "suggest" a particular title. I loved Whitehouse, and one bloke used to keep them for me. When you bought your mag/s they would wrap them in brown paper and put them in a plain bag. Sweet! After that I avoided the newsagents. One time I walked into a newsagent and bought a copy of mayfair and a paper to hide it in. The old woman on the till read out loud: "mayfair magazine for men who like to get hard" or something along those lines. It was a tumbleweed moment when I wished the ground would open up and take me. The shop was packed.
But, today young boys just have to surf to their fav site. But I prefer the rush of the old days. On the bus home you would sit clutching your bag trying to hide your hard-on. And when you got home nothing could stop you retiring to your bedroom!
