I remember Bob Hawke when he was the Labor Prime Minister of Australia in the 80's.

At the time, X-rated videos were under attack from the anti-fun squad. They were legally sold via mail order from the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. As long as you didn't exhibit them to minors or anyone who didn't want to see them you were OK.*

The usual suspects were pushing for a total ban and even bought Mary Whitehouse out here to help their campaign. Mr Hawke really had bigger things to worry about, but eventually gave a press conference where he announced that his government "had taken a LONG HARD look at this issue (paused while the journalists had a giggle) and have decided that the present laws were adequate". He managed to address the issue and give it the lack of credibility it deserved.

In my worthless opinion, the present government is hamstrung with political correctness which includes the idea that anything 'blokes' like must be bad. The traditional parties seem stuck in a rut where they have spent so much time being heard saying the 'right' things and being seen going to church etc that they actually think the general community is like that. It makes me want to drive around with a bumper sticker saying "I wank off to porn and I vote".

*Except in Western Australia where under a state Labor Government in 1988, possession of X rated material was made illegal. Indeed, upon waking up one morning and hearing the news that you could be jailed for simply having 'Debbie Does Dallas' in your cabinet, I panicked and destroyed all my porno tapes. I imagined that the cops would have access to the mail order customer lists and that they would be breaking down my door any minute. As it turned out, the politicians quickly realized the sheer number of people they had upset with this lunacy, and the police rarely arrested people for this offense - usually only when they were caught pirating the stuff. Rather ironic when you consider that by arresting the pirates they were helping the porn industry to profit!

The current system does seem rather laughable

You can order porn from a territory which is exploiting a loophole in the law but cant buy it from a shop in your own state.

Sounds all too much like the UK with their backward stance which sees all the jobs/companies being transferred offshore and the porn coming via the mail even though its illegal

Imagine how many jobs could be created in the states if they did away with these morally outdated prohibition laws

The simple facts are Prohibition laws drive demand under ground and even worse it costs vasts sums of OUR taxes to implement while wasting the time of those enforcing them

Alcohol,hard drugs,porn....what next?

Default Internet filter blacklist leaked on web

This exceeded my expectations. You can almost hear the looney-tunes playing in the background.

The Australian Government is now in the unenviable business of compiling and distributing a list which includes salacious and illegal material and publicising those very sites to the world.

This list has now been leaked and published on the Internet.

People have visited and reviewed the sites in the list;
"Many of the sites clearly contain only run-of-the-mill adult material, poker tips, or nothing controversial at all. Even if some of these sites may have been defaced at the time they were added to the list, how would the operators get their sites removed if the list is secret and no appeal is possible?"

Good luck,
/trm

I've visited Australia quiet a few times and always found it a modern sensible democracy. I hope it stays that way, any such legislation will back fire big time.

If Australia falls under UK law like many parts of the world.
Then you also fall under common law and your rights maybe getting
abused. Plus are you not part of the European courts on human rights,
where you cannot discriminate against a persons sexuality.

Its almost official that porn will be stopped in its tracks in Australia....that is until the work around for the filter is created

I've experienced some outages for VEF recently which re-directed me to an ISP page sorry cannot find which told me the filter was already being tested even though the they say nothing will hit the net till the end of the year

http://www.inquisitr.com/59472/milli...e-ejaculation/

Millions Of Extra Sites To Be Censorsed As Australian Gov. Bans Small Breasts, Female Ejaculation

Any pretense from the Australian Government that its proposed internet filter will not extend to millions of sites has died with news that the Government has banned small breasts and female ejaculation in adult material.

The ban (RC) on small breasted women in adult publications has been made by the Australian Classification Board allegedly on the grounds that such images could be construed as child pornography, even where those publications comply with American law and keep certification that performers are over 18.

Female ejaculation has been banned on the incredible grounds that “the depictions are a form of urination which is banned under the label of ‘golden showers’ in the Classification Guidelines” and/or “Female ejaculation is an ‘abhorrent’ depiction.” Notably here male ejaculation is completely legal under the same guidelines, attracting an X rating in Australia.

The Australian Sex Party argues that “There are over one million sites featuring female ejaculation and for Australia to be banning depictions and discussion of this important issue, takes us back into the Victorian era where they didn’t even believe that women could have orgasms.”

Millions though doesn’t start to get close to the number of sites that could potentially be banned with this change. Under Australian law, any site linking to a site that has been refused classification is also refused classification, so something as simple as a series of swapped links on a porn site which shows neither small breasts or female ejaculation would be banned. Then if it’s a general site with one small breasted performer, out comes the ban hammer as well, and that takes us to tens of millions of adult sites.

The addition of so many sites makes a mockery of the filtering trial undertaken last year, that only considered the ACMA Blacklist in one example, and a filtered list of tens of thousands of sites. Notably the second broader test showed internet speeds did slow down relative to the number of sites to be filtered; take that out to the millions or tens of million and the proposed National Broadband Network will be Dialup Plus vs anything the Government is promising.
