well, you asked! haven't had much to brag about since Lute Olson was the

me of a Hobbit. and now the Fran McCaffery era... (who?)

so keeping on topic, how about this rivalry? always good in wrestling!

Nothing wrong with the Hawkeyes bally. Actually the college baskeball I have the most emnity for is Syracuse. I think Boeheim is a whiner and his teams have always been lousy free throw shooters.

of course your location, religion, or just feelings mean a great deal when it comes to what counts as a 'great sporting derby'.......

while celtic and rangers means more than life itself to the two sets of fans, to the rest of us it means very little. same could be said for any of the supposed great rivalries.

but some more than others just seem to be a front for sheer lunacy and violence, mainly throughtout eastern europe and south america, and it doesnt end until someone gets killed or at least seriously hurt in some way; where as others, dare i suggest the north east of england, can be sorted out over a good drink afterwards..?? does that make them any less great..???

for my usual tuppence... i patrol the opposite side of the divide to the original thread poster, though ive really never felt the need to batter any bluenose just because we won or lost a match against them, in fact half of my friends over the years have been bham city fans as often as villa fans; as well as the usual 'only interested cause they're sucessful at the time' man utd and chelsea glory hunters of course..... lol.

If you a true fan of a team I dislike, I have no problem with that. Even if you are obnoxious about it. But fair-weather fans can just f*** off.

In fact, any one who comes into my team's venue wearing the opposition's colors is a braver man than I, because there are certain places I won't wear my team's colors in.

Mate, from a Blues fan to a Villa fan I find myself agreeing with you on nearly everything.
I hate it when things go to far, when it turns ugly and violent.
I love it with the banter you have with mates at work or in the pub after a derby (not so keen when you lot beat us though).
I do though value other derbies like Newcastle v Sunderland, Arsenal v Tottenham etc because they are special. Also the posts here about American sporting derbies and rivalries are great for giving insight into rivalries that I for one had little knowledge of before.

100% with you on that one, Varagorn.

I'm a Saints fan amd have many friends who are Pompey fans.

I like dishing out the banter when things are going our way, but you have to be prepaired to take it back when the roles are reversed.

Some people forget that, and that's when the trouble can start.

Hi friends.
In our country, the derby (if understood as a clash between teams from the same city) is FC Barcelona vs RCD Espaņol. But the fighting top competition, no doubt, is the FC Barcelona Real Madrid (and most the R.Madrid FC Barįa).
... But last times is not an actually competition ( RM 2-FCB 6, FCB 5- RM 0) ...

But i have a question for the eng friends... Nobody talks about Oxford-Cambridge annual race?

Salut !

The thing about a great sporting derby is that it only happens every so often (except for Celtic v, Rangers),The Boat race happens every year and only a tiny minority are affected or even interested.

Excuse me, friend, but i can't agree. The football derbys (all of it) happens two, or four or six, ... (league, cup, champions...) times a year, and they can be very very interesting.

Salut !

Baseball is huge in the US and Japan

Biggest US rivalry is Yankees VS Red Sox.
Biggest japanese rivalry and one of the truly great but relatively unknown rivalries in sport is Hanshin Tigers of Osaka VS Yomiuri Giants of Tokyo. It is unarguably Japan's biggest sporting event.
