Well, I took Coals advice. Now I can click on it and it doesn't ask for me to format. However nothing is there at all. WD says it is a partition failure and to reformat and start over. I still can't believe there isn't a way to get it all back w/o major time or $$. They suggested a site but of course their program is big bucks.
Thanks all for the help and suggestions. I'm willing to try a few more things but almost resigned to seeing it all gone. |

I can now see the drive...it just doesn't do anything. I'll try the checkdisk thing...WD said it was a partition failure do to improper disconnect. I don't see that because it didn't happen but oh well.
Thanks again for all the help |

There are quite a lot of free data recovery programs available but I haven't had to use one in ages so I don't know if any would help or make things worse http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/col...ads/files.html http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/sy...arecovery.HTML If your drive is under guarantee demand repair or refund, if it isn't and you feel like surgery take the drive out of its casing and mount it directly to the motherboard with the appropriate connector and power cable, this will eliminate the drive's controller card and the USB as a potential problem. WD suffered variable quality control a couple of years ago so if you need a new external drive I recommend Seagate's Freeagent Xtreme, the ESATA connection is then available as well as USB (if/when you have a computer with ESATA)

Looks like this is my option. Found a demo for a product called Data Recovery Wizard. I ran the demo and I can see my falls...including thumbnails. I just have to buy the product to complete the repair. I'm hoping to get it soon with an education discount. The company is EASEUS. I thought I would check and see if anyone new anything about them. Should work out to about $50. I figure at this point it is worth it if it works.

fix harddisk
since it spins up, what I suggested will work for about 39 dollars. it is simple to use and gets back most jpgs that are not completely fragged. if all else fails, i can help with the program and fix. am an expert with this sort of thing as have lost many hds' over the years. let me know if you still have prob after latest try. the fact that it simply lost partition sectioning is good. it can be recovered for jpgs and reformatted and work for maybe another year or so. do not keep anything on it again that is not available elsewhere again though. it will finally fail for good.

Just as a last resort then before you do, swap out your CD/DVD drive for the externals drive (make sure jumper settings correspond to those of the CD/DVD drive, although if it's the only device on that IDE channel it won't really matter) and see if bypassing the WD interface produces any result.
It's possible to restore a master boot record for a root drive, so there must be a solution for externals, but at this distance I'm reluctant to start giving instructions that I'd have to go looking for myself. Personally, I'd shelve it for the time being until something more concrete comes along. Last edited by Sid ney; October 23rd, 2008 at 04:12 PM.. |

Data recovery may/will result in a stream of numbered, but uncategorised files. My interim suggestion, at least, will bypass the WD enclosure's firmware (do a quickie search; there are many issues) to see if there is a chance to recover data in an orderly manner.

Well...I purchased the program and have started. It looks like it will take awhile. I too had concerns about numbered uncategorised files. However, if the demo run is accurate it was rebuilding and maintaining the original file organization. I'll keep everyone posted. I hope tomorrow or Saturday to be able to report success. I'll let you guys know. Thanks for all the tips and input.

Good luck! The idea of all those women vanishing off into the ether was almost too much.
Happened to me long ago. That's why I keep a mirror on a second (or third) HD. Last edited by Sid ney; October 24th, 2008 at 12:31 AM.. |
