I have a USB connection. I'll give all these suggestions a shot. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for all the tips. I really don't want to have to recreate my files. :-(

I use second copy to synchronise my stuff to a second internal HDD and an external. (Every now and then I get around to burning to DVD.) Ghost should do the same; whether better or not, I can't say. If money's an issue, freecommander seems to have a synchronise option built-in (haven't used it though.) It'll also do things like archive splitting, check-summing and will read rar's.
Hope it's a simple problem you're having. Last edited by Sid ney; October 20th, 2008 at 12:49 AM.. |

I think it is hopeless at this point. Everything seems to be gone. I'm trying to decide whether to reformat or not. I'm still waiting to hear back from Western Digital. I have most of my important stuff - Vintage Playboy and Penthouse were I can reconstruct it easy. The tough part is videos I've acquired since I last burned things to disk.
Thanks all for the advice. |

Don't reformat!!!! Does it at least spin up?
Power supplies can also fail, or the connector can have become damaged after too much movement etc. If it hums nicely then viper217's suggestions should resolve things. Do you have any other computers/installed OS's that you can try it out with? I had a curious issue with one of my USB flash drives recently - XP/SP3 stopped "seeing" it. I forget the solution, but I'll have a dig about tomorrow to see if that maybe is part of the problem. Last edited by Sid ney; October 20th, 2008 at 01:16 AM.. |

It seems to spin fine. No clicking or anything. I just can't get it to quit asking me to reformat or show the files on the drive.
I opened the case as someone suggested and everything seemed to be connected fine. If you come across anything I'll be interested to hear it. I have a busy week so I probably won't mess with it till next week...I'll wait and see if any other solutions present themselves. |

Here's something to look at in the meantime. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-2...ext-hard-drive
I think the solution I mentioned in my earlier post may have been as simple as running the Hardware wizard and waiting for it to get re-detected. Not certain yet if that's all I had to do to get it fixed. |

I've been reading this thread with interest, as I also have a WD external Hard drive.
A few days ago, mine also seemed to disapear. The odd thing was windows had just told me new updates had just been installed - for what I don't know as I don't allow auto updating on anything, or so I thought. Anyway to get the drive back, I went into the control panel and clicked on "system->device manager. The drive was listed there. I then right clicked it to bring up its properties and clicked "optimize for proformance". Bingo it was back. I use windows Vista, but I think XP has similar boxes. See picture: |

Good Point coals - windows no matter what version can shoot itself in the foot after auto-update.
Re-format only as your last option - patience young Jedi |
