Default A message from Spike Lee

In 1992 the New York Times incorrectly stated that Spike Lee, film director, did not have a degree. He left this message on an answering machine.

Quote:
This is Spike Lee. How you doing? Look, how in the hell are you going to write some bullshit that I don't have a fucking college degree? I got a fucking Master's from NYU and an undergraduate degree from Morehouse College. How's the fucking New York Times gonna write some bullshit that I don't have a fucking college degree? You know you motherfuckers ought to do some fucking research or whatever you call that shit before you write some fucking bullshit, all right? I got a fucking Master of Fine Arts from fucking NYU. I want a motherfucking retraction. All right, motherfucker?

Patriotism is considered to be an emotion a person ought to feel. But why? Why is it nobler to love your own country than to love someone else's?

Acting is trying to be absolutely truthful; to get audiences to believe that you are a dean, when, actually, not only are you not the dean, but if you walked into the building they'd probably throw you out. That's very hard..

I was making my living from a joke about my appearance that I didn't understand, and in a way still don't, because when I look in a mirror it doesn't seem funny to me.

As writers, we can't predict who might come along who might find our offerings valuable.

We're in an emergency situation. The United States has become an absolutely terrifying country, and I would hope that I could participate in some way in stopping the horror and the brutality.

Acting is an escape from the boring person that I am in real life.

I'm a very lucky man. It's a beautiful thing for a writer, to see people allowing your words to enter their own unconscious and their souls.

I never grew up thinking, 'One day I will play so and so' because I wasn't expecting to be an actor at all.

And my singing, I don't think I could sing Wagner or opera, but I could probably carry a tune. I was in a musical once, but it was never performed.

I do things, and other people laugh at them. I rarely know what the joke is supposed to be or why they're laughing.

Capital punishment is our society's recognition of the sanctity of human life.

You know, we should not be giving cash to people who basically are just going to blow it on drugsand not take care of their own children.

The place where you got to get revenues has to come from the middle class. That's where the huge number of people that are there. So the system does need to be revamped [to tax the rich less and the middle class more.]

If gun laws in fact worked, the sponsors of this type of legislation should have no difficulty drawing upon long lists of examples of criminal acts reduced by such legislation. That they cannot do so after a century and a half of trying - that they must sweep under the rug the southern attempts at gun control in the 1870-1910 period, the northeastern attempts in the 1920-1939 period, the attempts at both Federal and State levels in 1965-1976 - establishes the repeated, complete and inevitable failure of gun laws to control serious crime.

In my legal practice, I have seen certain Federal judges controlled or influenced by large corporations..., by large law firms...on more than one occasion(, and) ...by special interests...(some) ought to be thrown right off the bench because they are breaking every code of conduct.

I sleep so much better at night, knowing that America is protected from thin pickles and fast ketchup.

We must use a judicial, rather than a political, standard to evaluate [a nominee's] fitness for the Supreme Court. That standard must be based on the fundamental principle that judges interpret and apply but do not make law.

We must remember that judicial nominees are constrained in what they may discuss and how they may discuss it.

I do know dumb-ass questions when I see dumb-ass questions.

I wear a mezuzah just to remind me, just to make sure that there is never another holocaust anywhere.

Graduation is not the end; it's the beginning.

But I bear witness to Christ, too. I really know him to be the savior of the world. And that means more to me than almost anything else I know.

Default Truth

This week the San Diego Union-Tribune celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of the San Diego Union with an eight-page insert. Some pages are on that founding, some on journalistic standards. One was devoted to quotes:

Winston Churchill : “Truth is incontrovertible. Panic may resent it. Ignorance may deride it. Malice may distort it. But there it is.”
Flannery O'Connor: “The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.”
Mahatma Gandhi: “Truth never damages a cause that is just.”
Janet Hinostroza: “A democracy with people who are conveniently silent or afraid to tell the truth is not a democracy.”
Toni Morrison: "truth is trouble. It is trouble for the warmonger, the torturer, the corporate thief, the political hack, the corrupt justice, and for a comatose public.
Helen Thomas: “We don't go into journalism to be popular. It is our job to seek the truth and put constant pressure on our leaders until we get answers.”
Gao Qinrong: “Our world will not necessarily improve through our efforts. But without them it will cer tainly get worse, and that is the value of journalism.”
Suzy Kassem: “Truth does not sit in a cave and hide like a lie. It wanders around proudly and roars loudly like a lion.”
Ti-Grace Atkinson: “There is at least on thing more brutal than the truth, and that is the consequence of saying less than the truth.”
Sophocles: “Truth is always the strongest argument.”
Chief Joseph: “It does not require many words to speak the truth.”
Sister Ann Durst: “There is nothing to be feared from the truth; good prevails when people face the truth.”
Thomas Jefferson: “The man who fears no truths has nothing to fear from lies.”
Wole Soyinka: “Books and all forms of writing are terror to those who wish to suppress the truth.”
Herblock: “The Press must speak out, and if the occasion arises, raise bloody hell.”
George Washington: “Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light.”
Trump, back in November of 2012, actually had the gall to use that last quote in a tweet!

Until the wolf shall lay with lamb, we'd better be the wolves.

If I were a Palestinian of the right age, I'd eventually join one of the terrorist organizations.

Politics is not about schmoozing, it's about boxing. And you have to enter the arena; you have to come close enough that your face would ready the face of the other guy; and the price is that he can reach your face.

We want peace, but not at any price.

I remember my days as a graduate student at Stanford, within any leading university, a very active Israeli support, for Israel, Jews fighting for the cause of Israel. Now you find Israelis, former Israelis, and Arabs, and Jews, fighting for the Palestinian cause. We are somehow losing the moral high ground, and I keep telling our people it's great to deal with propaganda, to activate many ways, to deploy PR firms all around the world.

If we thought that instead of 200 Palestinian fatalities, 2,000 dead would put an end to the fighting at a stroke, we would use much more force.

The Palestinians are like crocodiles, the more you give them meat, they want more.

Geopolitics needs not just rhetoric, not just certain instincts, not just political skillful manipulation; it needs vision and what the Germans call erdung - you have to be connected to the ground always. You cannot float on your wishful thinking and hope that some miracles will become reality.

At this place, Jews have prayed throughout the generations, and it is fitting that the message of brotherhood should go out from here.

In Israel, generally speaking, politics is much more familiar than any other place. We all know each other.

The Israel legendary foreign minister, Abba Eban, used to say that the Palestinians had never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

I'm such a failed politician that all of my rivals have disappeared, on both sides.

Iran poses the most serious long-term threat to regional stability.

The one sure mark of a con, though, is the promise of free money.

What do the 5%, or the 1% actually use their money for? They lend it back to the economy at large, they load it down with debt. They make their money by lending to the bottom 95%, or the bottom 99%. When you give them more after-tax income, it enables them to buy even more control of government, even more control of election campaigns. They're not going to spend this money back into the goods-and-services economy.

Elites play the role today that landlords played under feudalism. They levy interest and financial fees that are like a tax, to support what the classical economists called "unproductive activity."

The most serious problems lie in the financial sphere, where the economy's debt overhead has grown more rapidly than the 'real' economy's ability to carry this debt. [...] The essence of the global financial bubble is that savings are diverted to inflate the stock market, bond market and real estate prices rather than to build new factories and employ more labor.

What's bad for the frackers usually is good for the rest of the world.

There are two definitions of deflation. Most people think of it simply as prices going down. But debt deflation is what happens when people have to spend more and more of their income to carry the debts that they've run up - to pay their mortgage debt, to pay the credit card debt, to pay student loans.

You have a choice. Either you can have more oil, or more clean water. Fracking is not good for the water supply.

Debts grow and grow. And the more they grow, the more they shrink the economy. When you shrink the economy, you shrink the ability to pay the debts, so it's all an illusion that the system can be saved. The question is, how long are people going to be willing to live in this illusion?

The myth is that if housing prices go up, Americans will be richer. What banks - and behind them, the Federal Reserve - really want is for new buyers to be able to borrow enough money to buy the houses from mortgage defaulters, and thus save the banks from suffering from more mortgage defaults.

We're still in the collapse that began after 2008. There's not a new collapse, there hasn't been a recovery.
