From left to right: Elena Ceauscescu; Nicholae Ceauscescu; Emporer Hirohito; all have taken tea with HMQ. If there had been no Good Friday Agreement and no peace process in Northern Ireland and had my fate decided that I should meet Martin McGuinness in fair fight, he would almost certainly have won and killed me. But on the off chance that his luck was out and my luck was in, I would have shot him dead with a song in my heart. However, offered the choice, I would invite him to dinner and cook him a damned good meal ten times rather sit down with any one of these three ghouls even once. If the monarchy were to be abolished, the actual next-in-line would almost certainly be getting quite a let off.

Sinn Féin are the second biggest party in the north of Ireland. They have a mandate and wide support.

Having said this much, I am mildly intrigued that Mr McGuinness has sunk his own feelings sufficiently that he is willing to meet her. It might not necessarily be the happiest moment of his life either. He is, after all, a republican. By meeting her, he is conceding (no doubt with a lot of concealed resentment) that she is the head of state and he has a duty to acknowledge her. Perhaps he will emulate Tony Banks? Some of us will remember when Tony Banks MP was made a Privy Counsellor and swore his oath of allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen with his fingers crossed behind his back.

McGuiness is also a marxist and is no fool.
When the Queen visited the South Sinn Fein boycotted the event and were seen for what they are. MM is a wily little fellow and doesn't intend to repeat the mistake. He would sup with the devil for one bit of advantage for himself, indeed if rumours are true he already has. |
