I see far too many cyclists engaging in reckless behavior (blowing through stop signs, entering intersections by riding on the sidewalk on the wrong side of the road, crossing lanes without signaling etc.) Given that I also routinely see drivers acting as if there is no one else on the road and/or speeding, this is incredibly risky.

I suspect that parents drive their kids to school because that's what the other parents do. Fear of kidnapping comes into play, too. We used to walk the mile to school, which took awhile with my first grade brother in tow. Many kids walked further. We had raincoats, umbrellas, etc. but would be somewhat damp in severe storms with heavy winds. I was lucky to live in suburban California. I have heard tales of the joys of winter school walks in Ohio, New Jersey, and Canada.

Back to cyclists, we now have these rent-a-bikes all over and will doubtless have many more cyclists. I hope that all will be aware that motor vehicles have blind spots and inattentive drivers. Collisions are always unfavorable for cyclists. We will continue to see many more collisions involving young male cyclists, I am sure.

Apparently accident and emergency staff in London refer to cyclists as 'organ donors'.

I agree, there certainly are more cars on the roads than there are bicycles. Here in my area pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks and cars must stop and let them cross.
When it comes to bicycles motorists/cars have the right of way at crosswalks and bike path crossing, but even pedestrians walking the bike path must also heed the stop signs at bike path crossings.
Aside from some cyclist's reckless driving (Driving with no hands, weaving in and out of traffic/pedestrians, semi-reclining with their feet on the handlebars, eating, and generally not paying attention), I think some of the mishaps between them and motorists at crosswalks and bike path crossings is because they believe that they have the same rights of way as pedestrians, but they don't. They are guilty of not knowing and obeying the bicyclist rules/laws.

Its not that we hate bicyclists, they just need to learn and obey the rules/laws and regulations which pertain to them.
As another member stated, bicycles are the "minority" and they need to stop operating their bikes like they think they are driving a reinforced Sherman Tank.

If you look in any dictionary the term still means a two wheel cycle with either fat tires(for off road biking) or narrow tires for everyday street riding or racing.
Back in my youth me and a mate of mine owned a 10-soeed English Racer. It was considered quite prestigious owning one of those back then, and it made you a big shot in the neighborhood.

Right now, one of the internet's resident nutjobs who sadly doesn't appreciate the comedy gold he's provided with these two sentences.

"Proudly presented and gratefully received"
"I'm open to correction if I'm wrong"

To be fair, sometimes i wish my bike was a Sherman tank

But yes, obviously bike riders should know what they're doing in traffic!

I do not "hate" cyclists. I have one I ride often.

I am annoyed, however by their antics, riding on the pavement, ignoring traffic signals etc. and their "preciousness"

I once posted in the cycle thread something like "cyclists, get off the pavement"

The poor things complained to a mod who removed my post...bless
