Social media is reporting that barely a week after we lost Battle of Britain pilot Wg Cdr Tom Neil, Sqn Ldr Geoffrey Wellum, author of one of the best memoirs of the Battle (dramatized by the BBC for TV) "First Light" has just passed away. Inevitable as time progresses, but it is slipping from living memory.

Sqn Ldr Wellum was 96. As well as being the author of the notable memoir mentioned by Staffsyeoman, he is recognised as being the youngest pilot to take place in the Battle of Britain. He was then 18.

Screenwriter Shinobu Hashimoto, who wrote for some of the most iconic films in Japanese history, including The Seven Samurai and Rashomon from director Akira Kurosawa, has died. He was 100.

Amazing his Geofrrey Wellum was never knighted for his services let alone the other Few. RIP Mr Wellum, you've earned it and a grateful thanks from a nation and the world too.

Just been reported that Adrian Cronaur has died at 79. He was the forces DJ that inspired Good Morning Vietnam and Robin Williams portrayal of him in that film. One of my favourite lines is " well it's six o'clock in the morning here, what does the O stand for, oh my god it's early!"

Los Angeles Times and Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic Jonathan Gold has died at 57.

He became the first restaurant critic to win a Pulitzer for criticism in 2007.

Gold died of pancreatic cancer Saturday after being diagnosed with the disease earlier this month, according to his newspaper.
