Whilst I have not read all the previous 84 pages of this thread, it has come to my attention that some of you have ridiculed the British motor industry.
I'll have you know that BL was probably the most consistent manufacturer in UK motoring history.......It consistently manufactured shite! As mentioned in earlier posts, the Allegro,Marina,Triumph TR7,and Rover SD1 highlight some of BL's failures, some of these cars could have been successful had more time and funds been allocated to R&D. |

Add to that list the Triumph Dolomite Sprint and Stag. Both could have been great cars...but the Doloshite and the Snag were so poorly developed and built.

British Leyland
It´s indeed a mystery to me that the British cars are very often commented as "crappy" here. They certainly had their odds and ends, but in order to show also sympathy to them I would like to tell you 2 stories (from a German perspective though).
1. Back in the days, my school-class went for a week to England. At the day when we departed, we were standing outside the station waiting for all travellers to arrive. It was a bitter cold day, and I observed a Lady (nah, not what you think) who entered a quite new VW Golf trying to start the engine. An easy procedure should one think, anyway she wasn´t able to get the car started. Perhaps she just missed to use the manual choke. Anyway, German Engineering When we reached Dover, there was some time left until the train to Canterbury was going to leave. Temperatures were low in Dover and the cars had a slight frozen layer on the screens. I again came to observe a Lady (nah, not what you think) who came out of the house, scratched a little ice from the windscreen and entered an Austin Allegro. In a glimpse of a second, immediately after the first ignitions the engine started and run perfectly and was idling smoothly Forget the Golf, go for an Allegro! 2. The neighbour to my parents´ house bought a Leyland Princess 2200 HLS (The Wedge) in these days, silver with a vinyl roof. He drove this car for more than 10 years and when he sold, it had more than 200.000 kms on the gauge. Apart from regular maintainances, this car ran trouble-free and was highly reliable. And I have never experienced a more comfortable and smoother ride compared to other cars in this class. The inline-6 was literally noiseless. Do what you will, I love the British Cars .

Many prior British and BMC group cars were tough, reliable and innovative but BL did nothing to create new engines or concepts - just kept bashing out the old cars with new badges and bodies but still with the old "A", "B" and "C" series power plants underneath. I've owned a Riley 1.5 and a MG1300 - both were fab, lasting many a year - and a lower powered Dolomite 1850 which avoided the engine issues of the Sprint and remains my favourite car to this day. |

British Leyland had an operation here,
Famous for producing a major Lemon, The P76 It bought on their downfall in the 70's here. I can't say of it was a lemon, you'll have to decide if you read this article The few people I know that drove one loved it's lemon qualities

I can't stop laughing at this
The Honda Civic, those rear tail lights at night are so off putting I want them to fail and have it rear ended , by another Civic because the front is equally appalling

I nearly submitted the Bentley Bentayga, but then remembered this little stunner.
The 'Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury'. Just look at it..... Last edited by Estreeter; July 5th, 2018 at 02:39 PM.. Reason: re sized images, 200x200 max !!! |

The thing is; if someone did rear-end this car...how would you know?
