Colonoscopy prep?
Halt!...who goes there? Friend? or Enema? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enema Endoscopy (top down) are usually perfomed under slight sedation, 10mg diazepam and a muscle relaxant. If you can swallow when instructed it helps them get the camera past the epiglottis. Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy (bottom up)may have some muscle relaxant, but I am not certain. The finger up the chuff thing raised by BB is called a DRE or digital rectal examination and is primarily for prostate palpation to check for size and nodules, cancer or hypertrophy and it isnt pleasant nor is there any form of warning or prep other then take off your skids and brings your knees up under your chin |

When I had my Endoscopy I had no sedation. I was offered it, but because I was driving they told me that after the proceedure i'd have to wait an hour before driving home. So I decided to be brave

Brave, or just plain damn crazy? I had the procedure last year. The evening before I had to drink 6 litres of diuretic liquid over a 2 hour period. That was truly one of the most miserable, unpleasant and downright horrible experiences of my life. The actual procedure? After the sedation the drowsiness took effect almost immediately, I hardly felt a thing as the doc inserted the camera and actually fell asleep a minute or so later. So, prep bad, procedure a dawdle.

the Go-Lyte prep(the gallon or so of clear rather nasty tasting laxative prep) can be made more tolerable to drink by mixing it with ginger ale and refrigerated or served over ice(ginger ale being a clear liquid is ok to take with the prep)
For the medication for the procedure----I suggest you ask for versed instead of valium(diazepam). Fewer side effects Am an RN and have assisted colonoscopy procedures many times over the years. Have also have had colonoscopy myself as part of middle age person med check-up. And my wife and I(she's also a nurse) purchased 2 colonoscopy machines, etc and modified the scopes a bit. We added a number of tubings run alongside main colonoscope that have balloon at end of each tube(small urinary cath with 10cc balloon) along with opening just beyond the balloon). We also added a number of small vibrators to the exterior of the colonoscope along its length. The whole colonoscope is now roughly 3/4 inch diameter but still flexible and can be guided without much difficulty the entire length of large intestine. Once we inserted a colonscopy tube to each other to the proximal end of the ascending colon. we lie down and turn the machine on. the balloons are set to inflated and deflate gradually over and over giving a pulsating sensation in our bellies. Enema bags attached to the tubes that have open end beyond the balloons gradually fill us both with 2-3 liters each over the course of an hour(a large balloon inflated just inside our rectum holds everything in place). And the numerous small vibrators give our intestines a quivering sensation |

It's FINE
I was dreading mine but when I had it done I even refused the gas which makes you all Woosey. OK it wasn't a barrel of laughs but it was no worse than discomfort - not real 'pain'.

One of the amazing things of having a colonoscopy is the recovery. They pump air into you so they can get a good look around. So in the recovery room, all that air is escaping the way it got in. If you're a nurse in the recovery room, all you hear all day is very loud farts. At least they don't smell.

I've had two. Both times I had a sedative (always accept drugs if offered, is my motto), and also fell asleep both times - in fact, I can't remember the second one at all, just waiting, and going into the room.
It was worse when a doctor tried to push some piles back up, a few weeks ago (they're ok now) and having a camera up my nose was pretty bad as well. Having a "sounding" down the urethra, both for the Dr to have a look and to take a stent out, was fine, for all that the tube was the width of a pencil: the urethra can take much more than you'd imagine. |

I have to have one next month I am not looking forward to it, in fact i'm dreading it. Last time I was in hospital I had an enema everyday until I refused. Having a Doctor messing about with your arsehole is very unpleasant. It will take more than 10mg of diazapam to sedate me. A harpoon loaded with heroin might work.
