Here’s a clip from a 1976 Morecambe and Wise Show , and I’m certain the blonde girl with the long hair on the left is Claire Russell. I’m sure I’ve seen the other girl in other shows and films, but I can’t recall her name.

The clip itself has a history for me. For years I’ve had a hazy memory of seeing this M&W sketch as a boy.

Hot day, M&W sunbathing in the garden and the two blonde girls, but I couldn’t recall when it was from.

I seem to recall a delicate British accent like Claire, but then a French accented girl springs to mind. I tried to find the sketch for years, but with no luck.

When the internet came into it’s own, a search brought a Thames series sketch and a glimmer of hope came when the Thames Years DVD came out, but there was no garden sketch and no blonde girls.

Then only a few weeks ago, I found out the Thames TV sketch shown in 1983 (I think the girl has a French accent) was a re-writing of a previous BBC sketch from 1976 (this clip with Claire). The latter being available on DVD for several years! Aaargh!

I recognised Claire from The Benny Hill Show and made the connection, even though she’s not credited in the episode. Had she been credited, I might have made the connection sooner.

The mystery finally solved, I searched M&W on VEF and found Claire’s name, hence this post, so thanks for the indentification all you VEF posters!

This is just the final part of the sketch, but I’ll upload the whole sketch if requested.

Now if I can just find out who the other girl in the sketch is and the Thames TV sketch…

Not here afaics. First from her appearances as a PH columnist. Then from Escapade [exact date unknown]. Last one from old CI or MO, one-off not a set.
