GRIM SCENE: Police examine the scene outside a Sherbourne St. building yesterday after a woman identified as Mikale Manik fell to her death.

A 28-year-old Toronto woman is dead after what police are calling an accidental fall from the 11th-storey balcony of a downtown apartment building yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses saw the woman, identified as Mikale Manik, climb through a tear in the pigeon wire netting encasing the balcony and attempt to cross over to the neighbouring unit, just a few feet away.

"We heard her purse drop and we looked up and saw her trying to get from one side of the balcony on to the other," said witness Wentworth McFarlane.

McFarlane was standing across the street from the building at 565 Sherbourne St., near Isabella St., waiting for a bus when he saw the woman struggling outside the balcony.

He watched as she attempted to manoeuvre herself around a brick partition and on to the neighbouring balcony.

But, he said, she was unable to push through the pigeon wiring on the other side and lost her footing.

"There was nothing for her to hold on to. As soon as she lost her grip, I turned away," he said.

"There was no yelling or anything."

News of the death brought her close friend and 11th floor neighbour, Joe Myers, to tears yesterday.

Manik had been having relationship troubles over the past few days, and had recently been locked out of her apartment, Myers said.

However, she was typically an upbeat person who only drank socially and spurned drugs, said Myers, a nurse.

"She was very healthy as far as I know — both physically and mentally," Myers said.

Manik worked as an exotic dancer, mostly in the United States.

"I think she was a little too classy for the places in town," Myers said.

"I think she did fairly well. I don't think she was hard up for money," he said. "She had a good family life and thought very highly of her family."

Although she worked as a stripper, neighbours said she dressed modestly.

"She was very discreet," Myers said.

"She was a very pretty girl, not a flashy dresser," said neighbour Lila Vamosi.

"She didn't have a bare midriff or that sort of thing. She just dressed in an ordinary way."

Manik was an animal lover and had just gotten a new kitten, Myers said.

McFarlane was among the first to reach the body lying on the pavement outside the ground-level Dagale Beauty Salon.

He used a blanket to cover the dead woman, whom he said was wearing a short nightgown, and waited for police.

Sonny Pham works at Seductive Nails, a nail salon located on the ground level of the building, where the deceased had been a regular client for three years.

"She was a very nice girl. She was very beautiful," Pham said, displaying two pictures of the woman he said posed as a Sunshine Girl.

"I've lived here since '99 and she was here when I came here," said another building resident who lived two doors down from the victim.

"It's so sad. She was a very pretty woman and when she said hello to me, she had a very sweet smile."

"Everything we have so far is leaning towards an accidental fall," said Toronto police Detective Norm Proctor.

"We don't have any indication of foul play but the investigation will be ongoing for at least a few days," said Proctor.

"She was out on her balcony and she fell."

A man who was inside the unit with the woman at the time of the accident was taken in by police for questioning, but released soon after.

He returned to the building later in the afternoon with Proctor and left shortly afterwards with a pet carrying case.


Rest in peace Damian. And thank You guys for bringing her to my attention. She was truly Sex on legs, and seems to have been a fine person, too. Further searches with the names of Mikale Malik and Kristen Edwards revealed nothing new so far.
