Star Wars: The Last Jedi
NO SPOILERS NO SPOILERS Episode VIII picks up right after Episode VII,with Rey (Daisy Ridley) seeking out Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) for training,Princess-now-General Leia (Carrie Fisher) and the Resistance on the run from but still taking on The First Order. This movie caught me off guard several times, and there are so many red herrings in this film.Redder than the salt sands of one of the featured planets in the movie. What i loved about the movie was the actual tug of war, turmoil and struggle with the dark side and light side of the force,i thought it was brought out well visually and through certain characters. I thought the dynamic between Rey and Luke worked well.Ridley does well once again as the novice Jedi.Mark Hamil was outstanding as Luke, now Force weary and a reluctant Jedi Master and trainer. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) was definitely more interesting this time around.Drivers performance was very good as the conflicted and angry Sith lord who focuses his energies into making himself and the universe around him into what he wants it to be. I thought the film gave the late great Carrie Fisher a good send off and it was definitely enhanced by her rewriting some of her lines in the film. I enjoyed how they injected humor into the character of General Hux (a still pissed off Domhnall Gleeson) I thought Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis at his best) definitely cast a more intimidating shadow this time around......especially in the first half of the movie. Those little Porgs are used just enough not to be obnoxious. The humor worked well. The space and land battles looked incredible. My emotional chord was definitely struck a couple of times. Now to the what i didnt like. Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) I enjoyed his heroics but something the character does didnt sit well with me and in the end was handled way to casually. Finn (John Boyega) i think Boyega does all he can with the character but his path/mission had it's moments but mainly felt like one of those boring, unfocused episodes of Star Wars Rebels, and the woman he teams up with Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) was just ok. There are things that occur that are out of the norm of the rest of the SW films and not in a good way, they really just open plot holes. So many situations and characters were hyped up but in the end it/they go somewhere lackluster or plays out in a disappointing way. In the end TLJ is a good movie but could have been better. In fact im not really enthusiastic about the next chapter,it wont be a long 2 year wait for me but i will definitely see it though because hey it's Star Wars. Scale of 1-10 a 7½ |

Captain Underpants. This is the the good thing about having grandkids, you get to appreciate films that otherwise you would never have seen.
I haven't seen the new Star Wars and probably won't. I'm not a fan of the franchise (except for Rogue One), but I have to ask, where did this new lot of baddies come from and how are they so powerful? I thought the rebels destroyed the Empire? |

I watched Day of the Jackal (1973) for the nth time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Da...e_Jackal_(film) Best damn assassination film I have ever seen. Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale are perfectly cast in their roles.
The only minor problem I have with the film is that the specially built rifle does not have the action barrel part permanently attached to the optics. I don't think a professional killer would rely on a non-tested just screwed together weapon for a precision shot. Retaining zero is a real problem for rifles that are test fired, disassembled and then reassembled without a test fire. Even a head shot at 130+ yards might have enough drift to miss. Also the test rifle bullets were not the same as the explosive rounds although the film did show that after the test rounds were zeroed in, the explosive round also hit the same point of impact. Differences in weight and shape of the rounds can cause differences in point of impact. Regardless, five of five stars. Great film. Some nice ladies in it too. |

White Sands (1992)
White Sands (1992)
Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L Jackson. Dunno how or why I wanted to re-watch this but I did for that 90s nostalgia I guess. Anyhooo..... Dafoe is a small town sheriff who gets mixed up in some FBI/CIA $ for weapons deal. This isn't really explained well or just done badly because the movie is more concerned with who is double dealing who and that too isn't done well either. It has potential to be a really good movie but after looking at this again after many years I can't believe how or why I rated it then! The overall look of the film and the god awful soundtrack dont do anything to help. This is more like a 90s promo for some music video. Disappointed re-watch rating! 5/10 |

Midnight Run (1988)
Midnight Run (1988)
Robert DeNiro, Charles Grodin A terrific comedy buddy movie about former cop Jack Walsh (DeNiro) road trip adventure to get mob accountant "The Duke" (Grodin) back to LA in time before he defaults on his $100,000 bail bond and before the mob gets a hold of him. If there was ever a movie to redeem my previous "nostalgia" viewing choice, this did the trick. Ok, not the same genre per se but still. Sublime acting from both main leads, excellent support from all the rest of the cast. Saw this in the cinema back in '88 where everyone there had a damn good laugh! Great viewing, seen this countless times, highly recommended. Rewind movie redemption 9.5/10 |

I went last night to see- “Pitch Perfect 3.” It was just so-so , sadly - t he only good thing I can say about it is that it’s not another repeat film of its predecessor. Instead, Kay Cannon (who’s written the screenplays for all three movies) has written a story about a last finale of the ' Bella's ' when they tour for the American Armed Forces - that frankly is only held afloat by the Comedy ability of Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick - overall , I would say , save your money and wait to access it for free on TV The only Film - that I am now really waiting for is the new Churchill film by Gary Oldman in the New Year .. I will see the New Star Wars Film , but I don't expect much ( the last one was a rip-off of the 1977 Plot - with a Death Planet rather than a Death Star etc ) |
