I wonder if you Brits realized when you approved the Chunnel that you were building a possible highway right into your lands for the German army. Things go to shit, they can just get some Otto Skorzeny type to drop in with a brigade of paratroops to secure your end of the Chunnel and drive panzers right into Britain. No need to deal with the Royal Navy this time.

Yes but we added a roundabout or two so without knowing it the invading EU forces will end up back where they started

Europe is just jam-packed with people for the land mass and resources that they have, I think sooner or later there will be another huge war over there due to lack of basic necessities and cultural dysfunction. I hope we stay out of it too. I'm glad I don't live over there.

Our English friends can just dynamite the Chunnel and declare Fortress Britain when the time comes.

I remember reading once that the fertile soil for farming available here in Germany can support a population of about 60 million people at optimum efficiency. Our current population is 82 million. To simplify it, we import natural resources like food, gas and oil, and we export cars - but you can't eat cars in a time of crisis, or heat your home with them.


This lack of autarky was a decisive factor in why Germany was bound to lose both World Wars. As soon as our ancestors went up against opponents that could sustain a war effort for many years on end (like the British Empire with its vast overseas trade network in World War I, or the USSR with its near limitless natural resources and endless plains in World War II), defeat was only a matter of time.


The ups and downs of European civilization have been determined by our ability to explicitly or implicitly exploit other continents since at least the times of the Roman Empire, which fell apart within a single generation when the breadbasket provinces in Northern Africa were lost.

From what I have read of the U-Boat war in WWII, the English were hurting for food as well, since so much of their shipping tonnage was being sunk. We sent huge convoys of food to them, but a lot was lost.

America is the place to live if you want to keep eating in times of crisis. We've got a LOT of food. Maybe too much, see xyz's remark on our fat people. Even if we had another huge drought that lost us a lot of the farmland in the drier places, we'd still get by pretty well. We'd just have to give up on ethanol as a gas additive and eat meat only 5 days a week, instead of every day.

Our ability to withstand a severe drought is far ahead of what it was say 80 years ago. Here in the heartland, about 7 years ago, we had the worst drought we'd had since the 30's. Did anyone outside of this area even notice? Irrigation techniques, and I hate to say it but, all those chemicals that people hate, have increased our farming capacity immensely. Also, the growth of farming outside of the midwest...California, south Texas...has also made it easier for the US to weather a drought as compared to the 1930's or before.



The only possible problems are the hog farms that have been built in areas of the midwest that are depleting the aquifers faster than they can be replenished, and the soil in the midwest is getting really tired from a century plus of farming.

There are more "possible problems" -- when you look at where humanity gets its calories, its almost entirely from less than ten crops, either eaten directly or used as feed for animals, and while we have dramatically increased the productivity of these crops through genetics, irrigation and pest control, this has produced a genetically homogenous food supply.

Rice, maize, soy, wheat, potatos-- there is very little genetic diversity in these crops as grown by agrobusinesses

Long way of saying-- if you happened to have a blight that attacked the particular strains of, say, soy and wheat that dominate, we'd have a big problem feeding the world.

Here in Europe, agronomists warn that our soils are extremely tired.
I even spoke with a Professor of the Lausanne University who said that we almost poisoned our soil.
People of the generation of my father were used to exagerate with manure and chemical products in the past.
I remember helping him to yearly throw a lot of amount of chemical fertilizer in the vineyards.

A few weeks ago I've listened an agronomist telling that our modern agriculture has almost exausted potassium resources.
I don't know this branch, but according to him, it's very problematic.

It's now a problem that is recognised by your own politicians.
We all were shocked when Michelle Obama had to present a program to fight obesity in your country.

Friends of mine have their cousin living in LA. So they often travelled to the US. They told me that people in New York look "normal", but more they travelled to the center or to the West, more they had seen massive amount of extreme fat people.
Fifteen years ago I've myself worked with a New Yorker lawyer who was fit.
He told me several interesting things about the USA.
I still remember him telling: "Our country is run by lawyers... not by politicians" and "You can't imagine how obesity will cost billion of dollars to our economy in the future" and "Few American people vote during the election"

Do you know what surprise me the most on youtube.
It's American policemen. They look unfit and fat. Some of them are extremely fat.
I remember having watched a video on youtube of a cop who had difficulty to get out of his car during an assault. He took his gun in the trunk of his car, the gun looked small, because he was so fat.

General Schwarzkopf was obese.
There is a joke about American Army now.
It needs drones because your soldiers are not fit anymore.


It seems that in Mexico the problem of obesity is even worse.
Children drink too much soda and get diabete at 8 years old.
