Windows 10? - Page 16

I have many problem´s. I only get error messages : 80070003 from Windows Update.

I had Windows 8.1. Yesterday morning while browsing the news on Yahoo's home page I saw an article that said how to get Windows 10 installed right away without having to wait for the notice, so I went ahead and followed the instructions. I Downloaded a file onto a flash drive and then went on from there. Took about an hour total time on the installation and went flawlessly. There's been no trouble at all.

I like it much better than windows 8, not saying much, I know. But for me it is an improvement. One thing I would recommend for your home PC if using Windows 10, is tweaking the wifi settings. Turn off connect to open hot spots options and turn off connect to networks shared by contacts. I also told it to forget all networks but my home network under the manage known networks heading.

So far it's noticeably faster, and is compatible with a few old games I couldn't get to work on Windows 8, even though it said one game might be incompatible, it's running fine.

A lot of problems across Windows 10, for now, my advice, wait 3-6 months from now before put on PC for day-to-day use...

Because IE is part of the core of Windows and has been since IE was released. Win10 is not a "new" OS, its an "upgraded" Win8, which was an upgraded Win7, which was an upgraded WinXP, etc. etc. At its root it is the same basic software architecture with tweaks, code patches and new routines bolted on.

But I suspect you already knew that.

Oops.....near disaster.
I forgot to turn off "Automatic Update" on one of our machines. So, Windows Update reinstalled KB3035583, then attempted to download and install the Windows 10 Update. It failed, apparently because I had cancelled the reservation for that particular machine. Whew !

Lots of Day Two traffic, ranging from total installation failures, to more bugs than a Louisiana swamp in August. The reoccurring impression seems to be "Not ready for Prime Time". This despite the claims by Microsoft of the "millions" involved in their testing program.

But why ? Probably the best analysis is that Microsoft rushed 10 out the door to catch the large US "Back to School" market. The National Retail Federation in 2014 estimated consumers would spend upwards of $74.9 billion between July and September to get K-12 and college students ready for school. By contrast, the estimate for the Christmas shopping season was $614 billion.

Again, Microsoft as a marketing company, NOT a provider of top-line technology.

So who is Windows 10 for ?
I pulled these stats on desktop operating systems (OS) from the Netmarketshare.com website:

From what I've been reading, upgrading to Windows 10 has great appeal for users of Windows 8 and 8.1, who are anxious for the return of a "Start" button and the deemphasis on the "Metro" (smart tiles) GUI. The problem for Microsoft is nearly 61% of Windows users already have these features: it's called Windows 7. So what can they do to entice a switch ? And with an additional 12% of the install base (Windows XP) with no migration path, you now have nearly three-quarters of Windows users that Microsoft must beg, bribe, or browbeat into moving to Windows 10. It seems this is the weak point in the "Billion devices" plan. Fold into these figures the aforementioned 2.9% of the smartphone market held by Windows Phone and this seems like a pipe dream.

The two overhyped pieces of Windows 10, Cortana and Edge never made sense to from the beginning. And after further research, my understanding is no better.

While Cortana may prove to be a useful feature despite teething pains, the reviews I have read agree with my original statement that the best application of intelligent personal assistant apps must include their availability on mobile devices. To that end, Microsoft apparently in banking on market acceptance of their Cortana versions for Apple iOS and Android devices. But why exactly if I am an iOS user who presumably is already using Siri would I now want to install Cortana ? Siri has been in the iOS environment since it's beta test release in October 2011. Google's Now application has been out since July 2012. These products are two or three generations ahead of Cortana. I cannot see why I would favor Cortana over comparatively mature products like Siri or Google Now on platforms not native to Microsoft. This just doesn't seem logical.

I have stated numerous times that I do not use Internet Explorer due to lingering security vulnerabilities dating back years. By way of full disclosure, IE was never my preferred browser. I started as a Netscape user since version 6.2.2. So the release of Edge really doesn't hold much interest for me.

One thing that Chrome and the others share is that a user must CHOOSE to install these products, whereas Internet Explorer and now Edge are supplied as part of Windows. Despite the advantage of being on every Window desktop, the market chooses to install and actively use non-Microsoft browsers. So the logic of Edge as a selling point for Windows 10 escapes me. Those awaiting a "new" browser have already made their choice. The ship has sailed on......

Perhaps you can illuminate me ?

Another observation. The Windows 10 testers got their "push" last week. Yet, as I looked at weekly sales flyers in the Sunday paper for Staples, Office Depot, and Best Buy all are selling new PCs with Windows 10. Obviously Microsoft had to provide the OEMs with a release in time for them to ship product to the retailers.

No doubt your first experience of Windows 10 on a brand new computer is waiting for loads of updates to install........
