What if Family A was to bribe Family B with a photo of Family B's eldest dearest daughter putting herself through college dancing, in a club, with a pole and no clothes on . If Family B refuses to accept terms, then it's an all in brawl, like Jerry Springer

I love some of the ones already mentioned (Press Your Luck, Match Game)but I also enjoyed Password (hosted by Alan Ludden) and it's off-shoot Super Password (hosted by Bert Convey).

For me The Gong Show has never been topped. What could be better than Chuckie, The Unknown Comic, and the late great Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine. The only way they could have made it better was not to censor Jaye P. Morgan. Too bad they don't show what she really said today.

My top 5 all-time (US):
1. Concentration: the greatest "play-along" show. 2. Password, Password Plus, Super Password: the best of the celebrity shows, where they were allowed to come off looking good, usually, thanks to a slower pace, plus the puzzle improvements in the last 2 versions (but not Million Dollar Password!). 3. Match Game: the ultimate panel show, with more organic humor than the Squares. 4. Sale of the Century (80's version): it wasn't the hardest quiz show, as speed was emphasized, more than depth of knowledge, but the original Grundy formats were the best of that big-money daytime show era. It required players to win around 10-11 episode-length games, in order to build a bank earned by answering questions, such as a total of $750, $5 at a time. The shopping, & even the Winner's Board formats, really put players to the test in 2-3 days in real-time during that era, because of the taping schedule. It was more of a psychological challenge than it appeared on TV, which is why it's not on more people's lists, as it really required a cool head, rather than an academic approach, especially because the grand champion could walk away with as much as 3-4 times more than was available on the early Trebek Jeopardy years. 5. Press Your Luck: the best "goofy" game show, with those 6.5-to-1 Whammies, which were the perfect odds, long enough to let contestants temporarily forget their presence, but not long enough so as to make sure they come out at the best possible time. And, throw in a "cheater" (except he just outsmarted the producer & CBS) as its grand champion, for good measure. Check out the original ABC version on YouTube, Second Chance, as there's only a few surviving episodes; there's Devils, and not Whammys, but it has a superior question round, a faster, pattern-free board, and an overall tighter format, even compared to the CBS version, a solid 20 minutes of game play. Honorable Mention: Blockbusters: a great quiz show, beloved by the quiz fans, as it was the most challenging show on between the Fleming & Trebek Jeopardy runs. It included board game strategy and the greatest MC of all-time, Bill Cullen. And a second on the bizarre, enormous differences between US & UK game shows: 1. Money & Prizes are rubbish on UK shows. [Mic Drop] 2. Traditional US-style MC's are a cross between radio DJ's & newspaper reporters, very competent & professional, while UK MC's are generally the opposite, all over the place, mostly also rubbish. 3. The sets, the music, the formats, and the general look on US shows are considerably more "professional" than on UK shows, even today. Recent UK shows I've seen are always in front of the constant video walls, so as not to require the building of a set (just change the graphic for the next show), and there's entirely too much side chit-chat, in lieu of actual, you know, game play; it's as though the players, celebrities, and MC just really like hearing themselves talk. Even the high-brow shows come off like a radio "morning zoo". The formats are also too derivative of each other on UK shows historically, with many shows being just slightly different than another, something US viewers don't historically stand for (which is one of the many reasons why game shows are dead in this country, save four, Price is Right, Let's Make a Deal, Wheel of Fortune, & Jeopardy!). 4. UK shows are either absurdly super-serious, especially given the zero stakes involved (Masterminds, Countdown...and don't talk to me about "prestige") or trashy. US shows are better, with the exception of the garbage Barris shows (Newlywed & Dating Games, Gong Show), about finding a good mix of seriousness & fun. |
