I have played in bands over the years, everything from classic rock to variety bands, blues bands original bands and played in a few oldies/do wop bands on the casino circuit.
My favorite is blues but there is not a big market for it these days,so I mostly play in weekend warrior "Dad Rock" cover bands, mostly to socialize and get out of the house. |

Since my last post, I've been active with a "collective". The idea might appeal to musos out there. We hardly ever meet and live all over - but with computer-based recording we can still collaborate. For instance, the drummer lives and works in Switzerland. Another member is in the Scottish highlands. If one of the collective has a song idea to record, you do your part or a demo and email the WAV file over to, say, the drummer to add skins or to the keyboard guy and build up from there. I get asked to do guitar solos or add a bit of ethereal violin. We have enough for an album now. It's a bit arty and ambient, not really my taste, but that's not the point. I can equally put up my more poppy stuff for embellishment and it will get serious consideration - as a matter of pride, even if it's not your bag - you give the best you can to the other members. |

When I was on the New Jersey club circuit back in the 80's, we were booked into a biker bar in Englishtown. Yeah, we could rock a little T-Rex, which, when we did, managed to fire 'em up somewhat. But then Kevin, our guitar player, looked down at the set list and saw a Prince tune comin' up. So clever as he always was, he stepped up to the mic and exclaimed: "And now we're gonna do a tune by a bug-eyed faggot from Minneapolis!" |

I played guitar in weekend bar bands for about twenty years... my late teens to my mid thirties. Strictly cover bands. Give the people what they want. My last gig was about twenty years ago. I just got tired of it after a while. At first, it was all fun. Practice, load in , load out, the gig. I enjoyed it all. Then load in and load out started to be a drag but practice and the gigs were still fun - making music. Then practice started to be a drag, but the gigs were still fun. Then dealing with jackass bar owners and playing in dumps started to wear thin. The fact that I was playing in the southeast US when I am originally from the northeast US didn't help. Never was a fan of drunk rednecks.
Over the years I played a little bit of everything but hard rock is where my heart is. One band I played in had a motto "Songs you don't know by bands you do". We played music from bands that everyone knows but not the songs that got driven into the ground by the classic rock radio format. We played the other songs off of the albums that people remembered but weren't played to death by everyone else. That band was really popular and I had a great time in it. I still play all the time at home. I'll play guitar the rest of my life. Every time I would get the urge to get back in a band I would go see one of my friend's bands play and hang out afterwards to help load out. That would cure the itch for a few years. |

Not currently but many long years ago I was. I record by myself now using software and hardware. Way fewer egos to deal with (just mine)

Cool so many are playing, actually playing! Cheers mates!
I myself have been in a band and have songs hear and there over this wonderfully parade of comical band we all call The Web.
Always for free. All art should be free. Emotionalgrace Think TOOL meets NIN meets Avenged Sevenfold meets Mile Davis. And you're close... Check us out. If you are interested I will give the post of all my songs...
