I put some model railway bits on ebay. Stuff that I had forgotten I'd bought and made over £600. One loco kit I had bought for £5 went for £40 and the buyer thought it was cheap. A tool I sold for £173 could have been bought brand new for £190. Its a place where you need to do your homework. A loco I recently bought new for £69 was on ebay secondhand for prices between £73 and £85. Golden rule is, if you're spending a reasonable amount of money, use the internet to see what something costs elsewhere. Having said that I have had only good experiences with ebay. The small nunber of disappointments have been met with full refunds including postage.
I did see on youtube a video of a chap who bought an expensive games console for a very low price and was sent a package containing a few wires and a rock. |

Booksellers on ebay are the dumbest pricks when it comes to estimating market prices. I wanted a book and found it on ebay for £25. I wnt on Bookfinder.com and found five copies for 99 pence each plus postage

What I hate on eBay are the shill bidders. I saw a compact disc box set that I wanted. I knew it was an obvious counterfeit since that item has never been available on compact disc, but I thought it would look cool in my collection. I think the bid was at $40. I bid ten, the shill bid ten. I bid ten more, the shill bid ten more. In just a few minutes I ran the bid up to $185 and got outbid again by the shill and figured I better stop before I got stuck with it. Sure enough, a day or two later the seller contacted me and said the high bidder had "backed out" and I could have it for my last bid if I wanted it. I told him I was onto him and to go pound salt. Now *that* is a scam. Ebay has ended that practice by hiding the bidders' names.
I bought a rare guitar effects pedal and had to bid against a shill. I paid stupid money for it but I really wanted it and am in the end happy with the purchase and glad I got it. I have quit bidding on eBay auctions and only purchase But It Now items. I also do not buy delicate or fragile items. Most rank and file eBay sellers don't know squat about proper packing. |

Actually I find third party sellers on Amazon over price their listing more than Ebay. I'll see a CD on Amazon for $100 dollars but can find the same title on Ebay for close to retail price. (w/BIN)

I think ebay is so-so , its not as lucrative as it used to be in the early 2000's , the market crash in 2008 has taken a long time for ebay to get back to normal sales ( for me ) , my best advice to any seller on ebay , take good pictures , make sure you know exactly how much something will cost before you list - make sure if its valuable , you add on the recorded delivery cost to your postage costs
( as pay-pal can deduct all your money if there is a dispute and no proof of delivery - its not postage proof ) if a buyer - use the net to research prices , ebid , abebooks and bookfinder can have the same book or item a lot cheaper and if you want to not get involved in a bidding war use a sniping service ( I use auction sniper ) so you have a bid placed when you are offline automatically , 5 seconds before the auction end to out bid the opposition = and have the advantage of surprise ( and sometime be the only bidder ) ebay is great if you are a collector |

Most of the posters on this thread seem to be sellers as is my neighbor. From what he has told me sellers have it a lot harder than buyers. I just give him anything I want to get rid off and he does the rest. I use eBay myself only too buy and as a couple have stated you need to be aware of the REAL value of what you are looking for.
