David Jones, James Osterberg, and Declan MacManus*
*birth names of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Elvis Costello
Need to check where Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars ranks in Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums list (or similar). Without looking I'm pretty sure I will deem it not high enough. Or, how about the haunting melancholia of the song, Space Oddity? Between Space Oddity and Always Crashing In The Same Car, Bowie had a knack for simultaneously transcribing and transcending angst. Reminded me of an old girl friend who borrowed some of my cassette tapes for her car. Her stereo got stolen and all her 'main stream' music...but none of mine (Bowie, Velvet Underground, Television, Tangerine Dream, Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello, Bowie). You: "You said Bowie." Me: "Yeah, but it happened twice and Bowie didn't get stolen either time." Still pleases me that pond scum and I can be portrayed by the Venn Diagram of two circles never touching. |

Listened to Stardust so much I could sing along every lyric without missing. Not a big fan until college. Always loved The Man Who Sold The World and Life On Mars best. A lot of 90s grunge rockers cited him as their biggest inspiration.
Favorite Bowie moment: The uncomfortable look on Bing Crosby's face when he did a duet with Bowie, singing "Little Drummer Boy" on his Christmas special. Favorite Bowie video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDWPyVCT0X4
