Default Players Magazine Interview

Sade
Her sights set on a career as enriching as her eyes are beautiful, Sade pursues success with vigor. We think she'll make it.
By H.L. Sorrell
Players Magazine, Volume 13, Number 12, May 1987

Adult interracial videos are all the rage these days, and the beautiful and sexually talented ladies are beginning to arrive on the scene in increasing numbers. However, only a few manage to standout achieving recognition and popularity. You know the stars to whom I'm referring, Sahara, Jeannie Pepper, Angel Kelly, Mauvais DeNoire, Purple Passion, to name some of the top lovelies.
Well, now there's another beauty who's captured the imagination of aficionados of the genre; her name is Sade. Although she has the same air of provocative sensuality as the well-known singer by the same name, that's where the similarity ends.
With such videos as Strip Search, The Black Chill, Merry X-Miss, (see video review section this issue), Blowin' The Whistle, The Out of Towner, Black Angel, and the controversial, I Am Curious Black, Sade has developed a solid following. Some have even compared her to the reigning queen of black adult videos, the one and only Sahara.
Get to know this exciting new performer in the exclusive PLAYERS interview.

PLAYERS: You're from Sacremento, California. Since coming to Los Angeles you've done very well. Do you like it here?
SADE: I like it, um, I'd rather be in Europe right now (laughs), I'd rather be in Paris but I like it.

PLAYERS: It's funny that you should say that. From time to time I detect what sounds like an accent in your voice. Did you spend time in Europe?
SADE: No, but I'm going this summer.

PLAYERS: What part of Europe will you be going to?
SADE: I'll be going to Paris, Milan and Rome.

PLAYERS: Will this be work or pleasure?
SADE: Work and pleasure, and learning.

PLAYERS: Do you have a job as an actress over there?
SADE: No, it'll be for modeling. Photographer Raiko Hartman has made some connections for me. We're going over there and just see how things turn out. If it happens for me over there the way it's happening for me in Los Angeles, I'll stay there for about a year. Something should happen in a year. I'll be concentrating on the straight part of the business. I want to learn about their culture, learn some French, and see how they react to me.

PLAYERS: Tell us about your family. Is it a large one?
SADE: Actually I only have two brothers, two sisters, it's not that large. I'm the baby (laughs). My mother still lives in Sacremento, my father lives in Marin County, San Francisco.

PLAYERS: What kind of work do they do?
SADE: My mother's a nurse and my father's retired from the service.

PLAYERS: Did you ever spend any time on military bases?
SADE: No, never. I didn't know who my father was until I was nine-years-old. And then we finally got to know each other during court (proceedings) when he was trying to regain custody of me, trying to bind us back together. Which was weird, because my father remarried and married someone with the same name as my mother.

PLAYERS: But you still get along with both of them?
SADE: Oh, definitely. My mother's my best friend, my father's still a little strict, "Come in by twelve," (laughs).

PLAYERS: That remark leads me to a question that I sometimes ask young ladies in our business. How do your parents react to your involvement in adult entertainment?
SADE: Well, my mother knows. She doesn't know about the videos yet, but she knows about the nudes. As a matter of fact, when I did my first layout (see PL. Vol. 13 No. 7, ALICIA photo set) I called her up and said, "You can pick it up at the market!" (laughs). So she had my sister go out and get it. But it's not anything that they're really happy about because you have to think that I'm from a brokerage and banking background. But when I got married and got divorced, that's actually how I got into the industry.

PLAYERS: How did that come about?
SADE: He was white and from Greensboro, North Carolina. His family is worth 2.7 million dollars a year. They cut him off after they found out. They said, "You can have black friends but don't marry one." He tried to get me to settle down by keeping me away from people. So I left him and came back to California. I came to Los Angeles. if I had to do it over again, I would have listened and not married him.

PLAYERS: But did you have any related work experience before you broke into adult entertainment?
SADE: I came straight into it. I went for nude modeling, afterwards (a still photo session) I was asked if I wanted to do a video. They paid me what I wanted and that's how I started. And then I met the people in the industry. Before, I had this notion of slut this and that. But a lot of people in the industry are like next door neighbor. They have their flakes in the industry of course. But there are people that I've met who I've become close friends with. Elle Rio (a new Brazilian performer) is my best friend now. You make this industry what you want to make it. If you kept your self-respect, people will respect you. A lot of people that you'd never even think of, your next door neighbor little girl type, with a teen face can be in the industry. That's what I like about it. That's what kept me going.

PLAYERS: Were you early misgivings about the business because of your religious background?
SADE: No, actually it was more because of my bankers and brokerage background. I graduated mid term (from high school early), I speak Japanese. I mean to come from that conservative background to taking off my clothes and doing videos . . .

PLAYERS: You've just mention a couple of things that leads me to believe you went beyond a high school education. Did you go to college?
SADE: Yes I did for a year and a half. I had 27 more units to go for my A degree in Japanese Business Administration Culture. While at Sacremento State University I started to join a sorority, I used to be into that whole scene.

PLAYERS: What was your goal?
SADE: I first went through computer programming. I wanted to translate Japanese programs. Then I started working retail sales, clothing. You see when I was in high school I graduated mid term because I was really ahead of myself. Once I started working they wanted me full time. Then I went to school at night and took on another job (laughs). I was also handling a couple of units in college while working the two jobs. It was really heavy. I decided I wanted more than that. Soon after, a manager of a bank came in and liked the way I worked and wanted to hire me as a teller. She sent me to teller's school and after my training switched me to new accounts, then they promoted me to assistant operations, then an aide, and this went on and on. As people saw how I worked they picked me up. That's how I got into the brokerage business. They appreciated my work and background.

PLAYERS: So when did you cut it off?
SADE: When I got here (laughs.)

PLAYERS: You were tired of it? You just didn't want to do it anymore?
SADE: No, I'd love a brokerage firm, anything, American, New York Chicago, Pacific . . .

PLAYERS: Now we're talking about being an actual stock broker are we not?
SADE: Yes, that's my background. Before I got into this industry I had six more units, six more months to take my series seven and I would have had my broker's license.

PLAYERS: You've could have been on Wall Street!
SADE: Definitely, except my (ex) husband got involved and tried to take me away from those things to get my attention.

PLAYERS: Now that sounds like something really great that you could fall back on, if you'll need to fall back on anything at all. But getting back to the business, how do you feel about some of the guys you've been paired with in your videos?
SADE: In 1986 I learned more about myself than anyone can imagine. I never had sex with two men at the same time until I got into the industry. And I never thought about having a girl, and I love them now.

PLAYERS: Even in your private life you like girls?
SADE: Yes, yes. Um, I went through a phase where I started turning to devices instead of men. But with women I can never really have a woman for a lover. They're my friends. When I have to say whom I'll work with, I'll say, "This is who I'll work with," and as far as the women are concerned, they're my friend's friends therefore a ménage a trios or a one on one it's not just a sexual thing, even on set. That's why it turns out so good because that's how I feel. Before I didn't care if I had sex in my private life. I just did it for the screen and relied on devices.

PLAYERS
: So your participation in Adult has been good in helping you find yourself?
SADE: Excellent. That's it, it has.

PLAYERS: Having a broader knowledge of men, do you think that you'll be more particular about the kind of man that you finally select for yourself?
SADE: Yes. It's like now I can say, like I told you before, if I were to do it over again I would listen (and learn). I'm ready for another relationship. I can get married again. Because of the fact I'm more experienced and I'm ready for this now.

PLAYERS: What are you looking for in the man that you'd like to marry?
SADE: Wow! (laughs), somebody that's kind. I dont' care about handsome, as long as he's distinguished looking. Six feet or over? (laughs), very articulate, and an excellent working background. I can't have anyone just at my level or someone who's under me. Why would I want to support, if anything I want to share what I have. If he has anything extra, I'll still be there to share but he'll still have that upper hand, we'd be on the same level but he'd have the final say so. I'm still materialistic but not as much as I used to be.

PLAYERS: Despite the increasing popularity of interracial videos do you feel there is still a degree of racism in the industry?
SADE: Definitely, there's a degree of racism everywhere in the industry and outside the industry.

PLAYERS: How do you cope with it?
SADE: I can cope with it. It doesn't bother me if I'm called a name or something. I've had people who said they wouldn't work with me because I'm black and later on they'll change their mind and say, "Oh, I'll work with her, she's different," which kind of offends me, 'I'm different' how?

PLAYERS: There's one video you did, that I had some qualms about. In a scene with Frank James (a white actor), where you were buffing his shoes while he was eating . . .
SADE: Licorice, uh, Tootsie Rolls (laughs).

PLAYERS: Tootsie Rolls, that's right. And you didn't shine his hoes properly and he got very abusive . . .
SADE: He spit at me yeah, oh that's nothing. It's like working with him, if they know, if they work with you, you see it's a character.

PLAYERS: A lot of black guys rent or buy these videos to see beautiful black women. Even a clear thinking, liberal thinking white guy seeing that scene and its blatant abuse of a black woman might be offended by it.
SADE: That depends on where their minds are at. You know that some people are prejudice and there's going to be bigotry. (Pause), it doesn't bother me. It doesn't bother me at all. How can I explain this? It doesn't bother me if they see things like this because it's not me, it's a character.

PLAYERS: I follow what you're saying. Well, in your roles as a performer do you feel you have an obligation to be more selective of roles that you play, if they may have that adverse effect?
SADE: Now I am. But before to me it was more like this is a character being played. I'll go back to the beginning of my career and give you and example. I had to play an attendant in the 1920's and I had a stereotypical black dialect. To me that was fun. Now I'm more selective because I don't have to play a role like that. But I wanted to show them at that time, I can play this role. You know how when you're just getting into an industry and you've got something to prove. Well, not actually prove it, but you've got to take the good with the bad. And you see I can do this and it doesn't effect me, it doesn't change me in any way. That's what I mean.

PLAYERS: What's the funniest thing that ever happened to you on set?
SADE: I was working with Peter North (laughs), and I embarrassed him. I didn't mean to but I did. The cameraman, everybody just fell out laughing. Remember I told you I went through a phase using devices instead of me? Okay, they were really working me. We went from Florida to San Francisco, from San Francisco to Los Angeles. And I really didn't get any sleep because we were up shooting late. I was up for four days straight, four days! I was tired, I was really edgy. And at that time I was really into vibrators, I've got so many still in there (bedroom), (laughs). So here we are I'm tired, and I love him dearly but I was really bitchy that day. So we were doing this scene and he's never had a problem (getting it up) but there was this vibrator there and I grabbed the vibrator and I started going 'cause I wanted to come real fast and just get it out, right? And he goes, "No, no don't use the vibrator!" I go, "Get away from me, forget you," you know? (laughs). And everybody starts laughing. Here he is sitting there with a hard on, I end up coming by myself and I got up leaving him sitting there. And they taped it. He was so man, he turned red! (laughs).

PLAYERS: How do you feel about being compared to Sahara?
SADE: You know everyone's been saying that. I want to meet this girl. Everyone says, "You remind me of Sahara."

PLAYERS: Have you seen her work?
SADE: I haven't seen her videos, nothing. But I want to meet her; I would love to meet this girl. Because everyone says that, I really want to meet her.

PLAYERS: That would be interesting. Perhaps PLAYERS can help. There's a phrase that's becoming more and more popular, not only in the music business but in adult entertainment as well. It's called crossing over. Do you have any aspirations to crossover into general release entertainment?
SADE: Yes definitely. Lately I haven't been doing that much (X-rated) work because I've been doing more straight things, like modeling. I've been meeting people and I will tell them that I did some nude modeling, but I've been trying to get my face know in that direction.

PLAYERS: What give you pleasure on an everyday basis? What's your favorite food dish?
SADE: I love sushi and sake.

PLAYERS: Do you like to cook?
SADE: Yes, but I don't have to (laughs). For me I'll throw some bean sprouts together (laughs) . . . Japanese dishes.

PLAYERS: Do you eat lots of vegetables?
SADE: I eat a lot of fish; oysters, clams, shrimp, crab . . .

PLAYERS: Do you eat read meat?
SADE: If it's steak, but it has to be more rare, medium/rare but more red than anything.

PLAYERS: Your favorite sport?
SADE: Jet skiing!

PLAYERS: Where do you go when you jet ski?
SADE: Folsom Lake in Sacremento, every summer I jet ski.

PLAYERS: Do you workout to keep fit?
SADE: I used to belong to a spa. Now I workout on my own. I work my legs every morning, inside and outside, I work on my stomach and I work on my chest, push-ups.

PLAYERS: Are you into weights at all?
SADE: Not anymore. Basically I have my body to where I want it. I work on keeping my body firm. I don't want stretch marks or any of that. So I'm into a lot of calisthenics and aerobics.

PLAYERS: Are you into sports as a spector? The Super Bowl, boxing and all that?
SADE: That is funny, because if it's on TV, and I cheered for eight years, I don't want to watch it on TV (laughs).

PLAYERS: You were a cheerleader in junior high school, high school, and college as well?
SADE: Uh huh, yeah.

PLAYERS: Okay, give us a cheer.
SADE: (smiles) Give you're a cheer. Okay, let's see (pause). Okay I'll do an old college cheer (giggles).
Heart and Gold are our colors
And Panthers is our name
So look out everybody
There's nothing for you to gain.
Were the biggest (pats her hips)
And the fastest (pas her hips)
And were the best team around
Hey! Hey!
So beware (pat) and prepare (pat)
'Cause the Panthers won't let you down!
(laughs uncontrollably)

PLAYERS: Kinda takes you back huh?
SADE: (still laughing) Yeah!

PLAYERS: You've told me that you want to be known, obviously you mean you want to share your talents with the world?
SADE: Right.

PLAYERS: What is your one wish for the world?
SADE: That they can be as happy as I am, that they can try to understand one another. This is the hardest wish to come true because it hasn't been done. Because you've got so many different states, so many different countries. I mean to be satisfied and content and to have a more open mind. Take prejudice, some will say, "She's black but different, you don't talk like you're black, you don't act like you're black," like when I have my blue contact lenses on they'll ask, "What are you mixed with?" you know? Things like that. If they could just be more open to one another, just be happy they're alive.
