Well, our (Australia's) cricketers are now unemployed. A tour of India coming up (broadcast dollars galore) and the Ashes later in the year...it's going to be a very short unemployment period, methinks.

Out of contract not unemployed
They havent been locked out of using the facilities
Australia's top cricketers are owed $58 million by Cricket Australia (CA) with a lump-sum payment due in October. They've been talking for 7 months with no agreement I wouldnt bet on anything - who ever backs down will look like a fool The staggering part of all this is the games revenue for Australia is now AUS 300-400million http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-0...?section=sport Simon Katich asks Cricket Australia where all the money goes as pay dispute simmers "Average pay for domestic men grew by 53 per cent over the past five years to $200,000. Domestic players can already earn over $400,000 per year http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/...31-gwgzyd.html |

As an ex international sportsman, ok at the end of amateurism and the beginning of professionalism, we played a test series in Australia whilst in dispute with our home Union, not just because of money, but because of restrictions on whose and what kit we could wear, reported as of course a pay dispute by the press at home. My point is that the honour, and it is an incredible one, to play any sport for your Country is incredible and the pride in pulling on the shirt can never be beaten, so for the Australian players to react like this, there must be a far deeper cause, and the contempt shown by Cricket Australia must be far deeper than just money.
I hope it gets sorted out and we get to see an Ashes Tournament very soon! |

I blame television once again. And Indian television to be specific for the vast influx of money into the game. Turning players into overnight millionaires even those of not more than average talent. And to keep hold of their players those associations that could started to pay higher wages and centrally contract players. At first I thought this is great. Cricketers will at last get a decent wage and not have to do winter jobs. But as with everything the pay has gotten out of hand. As I've said before players deserve a decent wage for their skills and expertise but not to some of the obscene levels we are seeing. I always thought the baggy green meant a lot to Aussie cricketers too. And it is unfortunate that other unions/associations cannot hold onto their best players. Which means West Indies cricket is a shambles, many other players prefer to play in only the most lucrative forms of the game and so on. |

West Indies cricket cannot be too far from dying a death as they try to find players, with most young men heading for the States for Basketball, Baseball & AF, where salaries are for more lucrative than cricket. From what I have seen of the current ODI series with India, grounds are mainly empty and they are struggling to compete.
As for the baggy greens they have always had issues with the ACB regarding one issue or another, although with an Ashes series just around the corner, I believe the ACB will find a compromise rather than the cancellation of the tour and a serious loss of income. Well since sexism has entered the thread I will respond that I do watch it for the figures. However bad the oppo, 377 is no mean feat And Sri Lanka got quite a few against Australia the other day but were turned over quite easily today. So there must be Talent and Ability here. |
