Over the last year I've read several Earle Stanley Gardner Perry Mason novels, comparing them to the T.V. series adaptations. Some, like The Stuttering Bishop are fairly faithful. Others like Dangerous Dowager share little more than the title. Most fall somewhere in between.

Curiously, the film adaptations tend to follow the novels closely but are uniformly not very good.

Trying for the second time to read the Game of Thrones books. I love the TV show, but for some reason reading fantasy stuff like that just doesn't do it for me. Not that it's bad, but I guess my imagination doesn't like to fill in swords and magic and whatnot.

Akutagawa, "Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories"

Akutagawa, a Japanese who lived in the early part of the 20th century, wrote tales of the eerie and supernatural, a bit like Ambrose Bierce, Poe, Maupassant, and Algernon Blackwood. He specialized in taking old Japanese folk tales and rewriting them as more psychological horror.

He's probably best known for his story "In a Bamboo Grove" -- confusingly, this was filmed as "Rashomon", which is another story of his, also very good.

A skillful writer, even in translation he moves the story along in interesting ways. His tales of the macabre will be familiar to modern horror movie fans, stories like "Hell Screen" have that morbid Vincent Price "House of Wax" feel to them.

It normally sells for way more than that - and the standard of the line drawings and research - in this Title from Poland is OUTSTANDING /
the later issues of the ' Encylopaedia of Warships ' from AJ Press were printed bilingual ( in Polish and English ) so you can read it all .

The publication gives an extensive description of all combat actions the aircraft carrier Akagi participated in, from the Pearl Harbor Attack to the Battle of Midway, in which the ship was sunk.
As aircraft carriers did not fight directly, the book concentrates on her and accompanying aircraft carriers' aircraft battles, as it is not possible to separate the actions of planes assigned to a particular aircraft carrier in the three greatest battles of the period - attack on Pearl Harbor, extensively described raid of the Japanese aircraft carriers on the Indian Ocean, or the Battle of Midway.
Also other actions - attack on Rabaul, Port Darwin and Titiljap - are briefly described. Organization of the Japanese naval aviation is given special attention, including aircraft-based aircraft (till mid-1942).
The last chapter discusses all main types of aircraft based on the Akagi; all of them shown in pictures and some also in 1:200-scale planes.

The publication is enriched by two bilaterally printed A1 sheets, presenting colour profiles and 3D views, showing the aircraft carrier in the initial (1928) and the final (1941/1942) periods of military service.
Drawings of the aircraft carrier in 1928 configuration are also included, as well 3D views of armament and upper superstructure as in the Hawaii Attack and the Battle of Midway.

The IJN Akagi and her sister ship, Kaga were a lot like the British Courageous class. Like the British ships, they were previously battlecruisers and, because they had big hulls and powerful engines and not much armour to slow them down, they were chosen for conversion into aircraft carriers. Also like the British ships, they began their carrier careers with more than one flight deck. The British had two - the Japanese had three, one on top of another. Aircraft could land on the top deck and take off from the lower decks at the same time, speeding up launch and recovery. The conversion to a single deck became necessary because military carrier aircraft became heavier and needed longer take off and landing distances.

No surrender : the story of William E. Johns, DSM, Chief Ordnance Artificer and how he survived after the eventual sinking of HMS Exeter in the Java Sea in March 1942
( the book covers his service in the pre-war HMS Exeter and also the battle of the river Plate against the Graf Spee )

Simply put - a wonderful book , which I am re-reading
