Deepwater Horizon (2016) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon_(film)
Movie about the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The worst oil disaster in US history - so far. BP is the big villain being shown to cut corners to make more of a profit. From the reactions of the oil crew, this type of cost cutting is the norm. I wonder how many other potential disasters have been avoided. The oil rig is said to have 10% of its essential equipment not working which seems to bother some people and not others. It is not stated if this is normal or not in today's environment. A series of events - some decision based, some faulty equipment based leads to the disaster which killed 11 people not to mention the billions of dollars of damage it did to the surrounding areas. It makes me think we need more government supervision/regulators not less. Give it 3.5 out of 5. |

High Hopes (1988)
Excerpt Cyril (Phil Davis) is an old socialist who lives with his girlfriend Shirley (Ruth Sheen) in London. His old mother, Mrs Bender (Edna Doré), is a working-class lady who votes for the Tories, thus "stabbing herself in the back", as Cyril points out. She is among the last working-class people in the neighborhood who lives in a Counsil house as most of the other homes were turned into yuppie shacks. The rest of the story centers around Cyril's dealings with his companion who, much to his dismay, wants to have children, his social-climbing sister Valerie (Heather Tobias), her intrusive husband Martin (Philip Jackson), the village idiot Wayne (Jason Watkins) and the yuppie couple Rupert & Lætitia Boothe-Braine (David Bamber & Lesley Manville). A very amusing social satire by Mike Leigh that can be interpreted as a reaction to Thatcher's Britain. The characters may be too abstract and even clichéd but at least Cyril is an honest and believable guy who tries to cope with a system he detests in the best way he can. If you appreciate a good laugh and some honest emotions, put this one on your watchlist. |

The Mummy 2017
Apologies if someone has written about this already, but I just wanted to make a few comments after watching it. First of all, I'm not a fan of Scientology, but generally like their chief supporter Tom Cruise who stars in this film. I think I was just expecting too much from the latest Mummy film. The script was rubbish and a rip-off of Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, Mission Impossible, Resident Evil, An American Werewolf in London and the far superior British TV series from a year or so back called Jeckyll & Hyde which had considerable style and was similar in parts. Cruise, Russell Crowe and Anabelle Wallis - the good looking British actress from Peaky Blinders were all pretty awful. There were attempts to make the movie look a bit jokey at times, rather like Van Helsing and I think this was supposed to be the start of a new series called Dark Universe. But it didn't even come close to the last Mummy film series made in the late 1990s. Fortunately, this new film wasn't too long, but I just can't bring myself to say anything nice about it. I hope Tom Cruise doesn't do a follow-up as this is not one of his best. 3/10 is my rating. |

The Disaster Artist
Tommy Wiseau's 2003 film The Room,is definitely one of the best bad fims ever with it's terrible stiff acting and screenplay.I actually laughed when i found out James Franco was not only going to direct a film based on the making of The Room, but also star in it as Wiseau. Franco is incredible as Wiseau, completely immersing himself in the role so much so i forgot i was watching Franco. The supporting cast is also terrific Dave Franco as Greg Sestero, the line producer and actor who portrays "Mark" also Wiseau'sfriend and cheerleader. There's a who's who of celebrities throughout the film. It's funny ,inspiring and a joy to watch. At it's core is a message about not giving up on your dreams,or goals in life even if how you reach the goal was not the way you intended to. Scale of 1-10 a 10 Last Flag Flying Last Flag Flying is about as sobering and moving as HBO'S Taking Chance another film with the theme of bringing the body of a fallen soldier home, though in Last Flag Flying there is a familial connection. Larry "Doc" Shepherd (Steve Carell) tracks down Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston)and Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) his fellow Marines and friends he served with in Vietnam to accompany him in bringing his son home. All three leads are absolutely outstanding,i completely bought into them having history together. The story laced with grief, humor and guilt was moving and then some thanks to the direction of Richard Linklater and the chemistry between the three leads. There was a scene that could have played out terribly but fortunately was handled with beautiful grace. I found out a couple of facts about this film that enhanced my enjoyment of it. One of the best of 2017 Scale of 1-10 a 10 The Shape of Water Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is part Beauty and The Beast,Splash with doses of Eroctica. The tale of woman meets creature is shot beautifully and well paced and crafted. del Toro blends themes from our modern climate of race relations and equality with themes of The Cold War,and a 60's horror/sci fi film. Sally Hawkins is perfect as Elisa Esposito, a mute janitor at the facility in which the "Asset"(Doug Jones) is being held,Jones once again displays his graceful physical talents. There are also good turns by Richard Jenkins ,Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer Michael Shannon displays all the right menace and intensity as the sadistic Colonel Richard Strickland, the man in charge of the creature research team but it felt like he was portraying the same characters he has portrayed in previous films and TV shows. Del Toro' nails mostly all of what he goes for and puts on the screen with the exception of one scene that took me out of the film for a few minutes. This is definitely one of my favorite Guillermo del Toro films Scale of 1-10 an 8½ Lady Bird Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson is a high school senior that yearns for more than what her Sacramento California town has to offer, there are obstacles that make her goals seem unattainable. Saoirse Ronan is amazing in the title role, displaying all the right amounts of teenage angst and rebellion. Director and writer Greta Gerwig sets up all the right highs and lows of life, touching on teenage crushes, first loves, disappointments, parental love and findings one place in the world. The cast is outstanding including a nice turns by :Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein Stephen McKinley Henderson and Lois Smith Though some of the mother and daughter battles ring true, there were parts of that relationship that had a been there done that feel to them. Still this is one of the best coming of age films i have ever had the pleasure of watching. Scale of 1-10 an 8½ |

Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo (1995)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116371/ One of my favourite B movies from Troma, a pair of drunk dumbass trigger-happy redneck hunters travel to a remote island and ignoring all the warnings they disturb an ancient site killing the guardian and releasing a long buried evil. A local girl Sandy is chosen to replace him and she heads off to the island to try to defeat the beast. Stop-motion special effects help the story but the decision to play songs whilst people are talking is really annoying and detracts from the flow. Worth a look for B movie fans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvwkeJH0SuA

I am not reviewing a movie today , but I would like to ask a question. Do any of you guys ever watch the Fast and Furious movies starring Vin Diesel, and if you do, what is your opinion of these movies? Thanks.

I enjoyed the first two, but after that, it was just a strain to watch the movies try to 'one-up' the last film's stunts...

The Ghosts of Johnson Woods (2015)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4374502/ Micro budget movie, Lenny is an obese youngster who is obsessed with the idea of fame and makes short 10 second or so films using his mobile phone believing he will someday make it big in movies He meets neighbour Heather who appears to accept him as a person and even starts to help him make a horror film, whilst teasing him big style. There's no ghosts but there is a twist at the end that you may guess with the way the story unfolds. Not dire by any means, but there are no scares at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAVa7fPSJJA
