Burning DVDs from VOB files
Faced with this, how do I generate a DVD that will play in a "regular" DVD drive, such as one built in to a TV? Preferably with full range of DVD features - menus, chapter or scene selection etc. I have a couple of programs that I hoped might do the job, ImgBurn and DVD Styler but I've had no luck so far - just a bunch of error messages! Win10 Home, 64-bit, HP PC |

There is no need to extract the VOB files if you have the DVD that is not copyright protected; just copy the DVD and you will be prompted to remove the disc and insert an empty disc by the program you use. If it is copyright protected then you will have to rip and then recode the VOB files to a file format your DVD writing software accepts.

I don't have the physical DVD, just the VOB files etc. kindly uploaded to VEF by a fellow member. Should I simply copy all the files ( apart from the BUP files which I know are simple duplicates ) onto a blank DVD+R? |

Burning DVDs from VOB Files
As far as I am aware you need DVD authoring softawre. If you look at the content of a pre-recorded DVD (on a computer) the two main files in the root folder are VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS although they are actually folders. Most of the DVDs I have come across rarely has any files in AUDIO_TS folder, they are all in the VIDEO_TS folder, Whenever I create a video DVD, my software recognises from the format of the files this is the kind of disk that I want and ask me to confirm. After that it does its own thing. I use Cyberlink Power2Go (only because it came free with a Blu-Ray writer). By the way I don't think you are right about the BUP files, as they are only quite small in size (a few kilobytes).

Partial success.. but can DVD data be shrunk to fit?
Quantum, you were right about the BUP files... although they are simply duplicates of the .iso files they had to be there for my DVD burning software ( I used Ashampoo ) to function. So I simply CTRL-C and CTRL-V'd them ( and renamed, obvs )
Only issue now is that many of the DVD rips here on VEF are >4.7GB, exceeding the capacity of a standard single layer DVD. I'm sure I had software once that would "Shrink to Fit" DVD data to squeeze it on to a single layer DVD ( within reason ) - can anyone enlighten me? |

When you encode it is usually better to slightly reduce the audio bitrate to make it fit than to use DVD Shrink which reduces the video bitrate resulting in a poorer quality. Dolby audio formats such as AC3 are normally a smaller file size than MP2 or MP3 so you may want to keep that in mind when setting your encoding parameters. If you have the video and audio of the movie you wish to burn on a DVD compatible with VirtualDub formats changing the audio bitrate is quick and easy since you can clone the video without reducing the quality.

Quantum is right that you need DVD-authoring software. I think DVDauthorgui was my favourite, but I haven't authored a DVD for years.

Unless you need a physical DVD it might be better to just create an iso of it.
