Fluffers
I was watching an episode of QI recently and Stephen Fry asked the question, what finally brought about the demise of the fluffer? His answer was viagra.
I seem to to remember a feature in a magazine which suggested that the fluffer never really existed. I think it may have concerned Al Goldstein or Larry Flint. What is the truth? I would go with the idea that they never existed. Firstly, it is a great fantasy for a guy to think that there is a girl whose sole purpose is to play with a guy's cock to keep him ready. Secondly, having watched porn through the years, I would guess that 95% of all films were made on a shoestring budget (and it often shows). Therefore, I would think that the producers would be unlikely to pay a girl just to be a fluffer when the guy could do it for himself. I would be interested to hear from anyone who worked in the industry, particulary in the USA during the golden era, on whether they existed or not. |

There was an article in The New Yorker a number of years ago about the making of a porn film, and it definitely described the use of fluffers.

I think Viagra had something to do with it but I think the real reason fluffers went the way of the Dodo bird can be traced to the rise of VHS porno and the demise of high production values. Think about it, the BangBros and Brazzers of the world look like they simply pay an escort to screw them in hotel rooms on camera, what makes you think they have the money to hire additional fluff girls?

I do know that fluffers were used to keep Joe public hard on the 'record gangbang' films with Annabel Chong and Houston. Infact one of the fluffers on the Houston gangbang was pornstar Candy Apples.
By the way, this thread also belongs in Vintage Erotica Talk.

These posts seem to assume that fluffers are no more. Is this actually true? How do we know?

Must've been a very difficult occupation to get into: lots of stiff competition!

My point
We all do, it just sounds too good to be true, which makes me think that they never actually existed, or if they did then they were not as widespread as we would like to believe.
What was the going rate, were they on peice work? How did they go about getting a rise. If they got upset did they down tools? |

A couple articles that seem to confirm Viagra's role, when needed, in modern porn films. They also support that the fluffers did exist in porns earlier years and the reasons for their services. The second article is more detailed, with accounts from actual porn producers and performers.
From AllExperts: A fluffer is a hired member of the crew of a pornographic movie whose role on the set is to sexually arouse the male participants prior to the filming of scenes requiring erections. Presumably, the name arose, at least in part, as a mocking reference to the hair-fluffing make-up artists who kept the starlets in non-pornographic movies looking their very best in every scene. Many porn stars today maintain that fluffers are a thing of the past, needed in the 70s and 80s when the crew, shooting on celluloid, needed much more time to prepare a shot. Erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra have also taken part in replacing fluffers. Brittany Andrews states on her website that fluffers are now utilized only in "gang bang" scenarios. From newyork.timeout: No porn shoot is complete without a "fluffer," right? Wrong. "Fluffers haven't been used since the '70s," claims Joanna Angel, who heads alternative porn site and production company BurningAngel.com. "People don't realize this." In the past, a combination of bright lights and nerves might quell a porn star's, ahem, zest for performing, so a fluffer would be deployed to keep the male talent erect by any means necessary. But these days, Viagra and healthy competition mean actors are more likely to always be at the ready. "I don't bother hiring new guys just because they are willing to give me a good ole college try. Fuck that," says director Henri Pachard. "I'm hiring people who are capable of going." Michael Lucas of Lucas Entertainment is a little more forgiving, but he doesn't use fluffers either. "We show models pictures of their partners, and 90 percent of the time it works perfectly well," he says. "If it doesn't, the performer pops a Viagra." Back in the golden age of fluffing, the job description came down to having a talented mouth. "[The fluffer] would blow the actor that needed to be blown," Pachard says. "We never paid much attention. Some were hired as part of the crew as a 'general helper,' which included fluffing." But it wasn't always done openly. "I've seen situations where there might be a guy working that is more gay than straight, so maybe there will be a gay makeup artist that fluffs a guy kind of privately," says photographer Barbara Nitke. Eventually, the fluffer was phased out, with directors casting battle-tested performers. "Most of the guys don't need someone in addition to the person they're working with," Pachard says.—JH |
