Personally I think the styles never change that much. It is just at times certain looks are more popular or publicized than others.

It's funny I can remember buying a Fiesta Shaven Haven magazine in the mid-nineties and i didn't like the look at all. It looked odd - all my partners had a hairy bush. I went out with a woman - she was 21 I was 30 - in 1996. She had a hairy bush and never shaved it off completely but did tidy it up. We split up in 2005 and I started seing a 30 year old (I was 45). She shaved completely bald but by then I'd got used to the look from porn.

The bush has actually made a significant comeback in the industry.

According to last year’s figures, over four billion hours of porn was viewed on ************ alone. So we guess it’s safe to say that you, and most of the people you know, have probably watched it at least once.

But that’s the thing - you don’t even need to have watched a porno to know that female pornstars have no pubic hair.

Established in most western cultures in the past few decades, shaved crotches in porn became so prominent that they influenced the rise of pubic depilation in the general public.

In a recent Vice feature, porn scholar Joseph Slade told journalist Mark Hay that “no one has authoritatively established a causal connection," but "surveys of students in my media and sexuality classes indicated that women felt pressured [to go hairless] by boyfriends who were themselves conditioned by porn."

Slade also highlighted that hairlessness was not always the norm, and being bushy was rather quite prominent in the 1970s and '80s: "when hirsuteness was equated with virility and lubricity. Harry Reems and many male performers sported mustaches and hairy armpits and chest hair. And women sported hairy armpits and crotches."

However it seems that hair has actually made a significant comeback in the industry.

According to sexuality researcher Debra Herbenick, some performers started to opt to keep a bush around the turn of this decade. And according to performer turned producer Lily Campbell, within a couple of years, it's become normal for a third to half of the girls she shoots to keep a bush.

Pornstar Kasey Warner explained to Vice that she used to received plenty of flack from stories of directors and producers pushing for hairlessness - some even refused to work with her because she won't shave.

"When I got into the adult film industry" as recently as 2014, said pornstar Kasey Warner, "I had a bush only on top of my pubis. I was one of extremely few girls to sport anything more than a landing strip."

But now things are changing. Performer Ana Molly maintains that in the year she's had a full bush she's had no complaints.

"I was literally shocked when I let the bush grow half an inch and got compliments and thank yous from men," said Molly. "Fans, photographers, and lovers all say they like 'something down there.'" Since she stopped shaving as a preference, she added, "I don't believe I've ever been asked to shave everything entirely, or ever lost an opportunity" because of it.

The return of pubes to porn could help accelerate a greater acceptance for pubic hair within the general public as it did before with the trend of shaving. Porn has become more diverse and conceptual in many cases, and admit it: it's not going away any time soon.

"There is not one look or thing that is standard the way it was in the 70s or 80s," said indie-alt pornstar Joanna Angel. "Whatever you got," added yanks.com model Raven Snow, "somebody is probably going to want to see it."

Female armpit hair is back — and it might be here to stay. According to recent figures from research group Mintel, the percentage of women aged 16 to 24 who shaved their armpit hair has declined from 95 percent in 2013 to just 77 percent in 2016. Leg shaving is on the decline as well — 92 percent of women shaved their legs in 2013, but by 2016 those numbers had decreased to 85 percent. The Mintel figures are supported by numbers from the shaving and hair removal industry, which saw sales drop by five percent between 2015 and 2016.

“Clean eating is behind some of those changes. They’re worried about causing irritation from their skin because of these products. We can also see that they’re doing other things instead — so 29 percent say they’re adding steps to their skincare routine,” explained Roshida Khanom, Mintel’s associate director in beauty and personal care. “There’s also some pushing back against societal expectations of what women should look like.”

Men, meanwhile, appear to be increasingly preoccupied with maintaining their appearance. The menswear market grew by 2.8 percent the past year, while sales of women’s clothes grew by only 1.3 percent. In 2015, only 44 percent of men between 16 and 24 said they used hair conditioner. According to the most recent figures, 70 percent of young men now use it.
