Brand new Central AC system, zoned, with 2 separate units, one for upstairs and one for downstairs, plus new blower system in the attic with 2 smart thermostats that allows me to control the AC while away from home from my iPhone.

They arrived this morning about 8:40 and didn't finish until almost 6 pm.

I don't understand this need to control the AC while away. If you're not there, what do you care what the temperature inside is?

Because if you turn it off and let it get too hot during your absence, the system will have to work even harder to cool it down to your desired temperature, in our case, 76 degrees.

Plus it will be a waste of electricity that you cooled it down to 76 when you were there, maintained that constant temperature, and when you leave and shut it off and the temperature goes up to 85, all the electricity spent to maintain at 76 would be wasted.

If you have it at 76, and the temperature rises by 1 degree, the zoned system will kick in and bring it down to 75 and shut off, in less than 5 minutes.

If you let it go to 85 while you were gone, then it not only have to run a long time to come back down to 76, also because there was no circulation in the house with the air completely off, the humidity level has risen, so it has to work harder to get the humidity down (that's why it's called air CONDITIONED) and remove the moisture from of the indoor ambient air, before it will reach 76.

With the AC maintaining the temperature of 76, it keeps the air dry.

When we leave home, we move it up to 80 and it will still kick on and keep the home cool and dry.

Turning it completely off (and many folks do without thinking about it) is a no no.

Even office buildings and stores and businesses keep their AC on when they are closed and there is no one in them.
