That's a good question, not a stupid one
The PH site had a section named "Strongbox" containing hardcore shots that were never got published, so I assume some of the pictorials (I would say from 1990 onwards) were shot hardcore.

Well, I think what P-h*use was aiming for in their pre-mid-90s b/g pictorials was to push the envelope as far as possible, without showing actual penetration or oral contact. It almost became a game to see what they could get away with, or what sort of activity they could hide. There may have been some actual HC, but it was hidden away with camera angles and shadows.

To me, what made some of those softcore shoots so hot was when the models got so worked up that they didn't stop at just touching and kissing, and they went further than planned. I believe that's what is known in the industry as a "working accident".

After the mid-90s in P-h*use, they just went with all-the-way HC with nothing left to the imagination. I think it was a shame, because it took away the mystery, and the quality of the models in the b/g pictorials decreased significantly.
