I used to have XP SP2 w/Norton, twice I had to reload OS 'cause malware hijacked my comp, Norton knew nothing about it.

4 months now I have Vista(which is a pain); it has defender, firewall, and UAC(which I keep turned on) I don't know how good this stuff is, but it's there.
Also I have AVAST! (free) antivirus which seems to work well, updates itself 2-3 times a day, and has caught about 50 or so attempts so far, some of which looked like the same thing that nailed xp w/norton. I'm happy and keeping my fingers crossed.

If, while surfing, an official-looking thing pops up and says "You have a security problem, click here for free scan" or anything similar, DON'T do it. End that task. That's what got me before, when I was stupid.

It seems lately there are alot of viruses in imagehosts for previews, my AV goes nuts.
has anyone noticed that too?

- Use a licensed copy of XP or Vista (youre definately ARE a Windows user, otherwise you would not ask for Anti-Virus-Software ;-) ) and keep it updated with Windows updates
- Use only user rights (XP prof req!)
- AVG free Anti-Virus does the job
- a NAT Router is sufficient, otherwise ose Kerio free Firewall

I´ve used all antivirus trades you talked about. Since a year ago I have a trouble with K... Now I use Avast, it´s incredible, it works alone, without banners, not questions... Pehaps it´s good lucky, but I´m not sure.

I think not. Sorry.

For my own use I have no spy/malware programs, no virus software, and IPtables as a firewall. But this is only because I'm running Linux.

For Windows installations, I would use Avast! for viruses, a couple of malware/spyware programs for nasties, Windows Defender + ZoneAlarm firewall. All mentioned are free.

And the browser has to be more secure than IE. Firefox or Opera recommended.

As an IT pro, I avoid Norton and Symantec antivirus etc like the plague. I take great pleasure in removing it from users PCs. Horrible crap that is very succesful in slowing your PC down but not so good for stopping virus.
AVG free is great for home users on XP or vista. Windows defender and a modicum of common sense are important too!

The word on the street is that although earlier versions of Norton were problematical and also resource hogs the latest version is a first class product.

Thumbs down

I found Norton slowed my PC down to a crawl, so got rid ASAP. Downloaded AVG (free) which was fine for a while, but then my PC kept crashing on start up. Long story short...AVG, not compatable with Acer computers! Currently on 30 day free trial with Bitdefender.....
