I haven't watched wrestling in 3 years now. When I did, I saw a lot of old footage from the WWF, 80s and 90s, and Bobby Heenan was such a constantly entertaining figure in those time periods. Mostly as a color commentator. It didn't matter who his partner was, Vince McMahon, Gorilla Monsoon, he always was hilarious. It was always him and Jesse Ventura, and then a long period before Jerry Lawler blazed his own path of awesome color commentary (up until the mid 2000s). With those three, it's really hard to choose between them, but they were all unique. I think Heenan was a bit more insulting, probably the manager's mindset, where you talk up someone you support, and bury who you're against. Even though WWF style wrestling in the 80s varied from good to boring, he always made it tolerable, no matter the match quality. That's true talent. He did some managing in WWF, and was definitely great there, like backing up Curt Hennig or giving his bit in an amazing promo at Royal Rumble 1992. That was after Ric Flair won the WWF Championship, him and Flair speaking in one promo, amazing.

The reaction to his passing was somber, inasmuch that it's well known that he was in poor health for a long time. So I felt it was only a matter of time, as morbid as that sounds. I like to think of his passing as a transition to a better place. Him definitely, hopefully he is now resting in peace.

RIP Stanislav Petrov
a.k.a. the Russian that prevented WWIII.

Translated from Dutch (Belgian source)

Stanislav Petrov, the Russian soldier who saved the world from destruction in 1983, by ignoring a (false) alarm for an American nuclear attack, has died.

In the night of 26 on September 27, 1983, the heart of the Cold War entered a warning in the air defense control room of the Soviet Union. Russian satellites had detected how from Montana, USA five international nuclear missiles had gone up, destined for the USSR.

Normally, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, at that time in the control room, immediately alerted the Russian Commander, so that a retaliation campaign could be started. Petrov, however, judged that it was a matter of urgency.

His intuition told him that the five missiles did not look like a real American attack, and in addition, he had doubts about the reliability of the satellite warning system that the Soviets had only taken a year earlier.

The incident was immediately classified as top secret. Only in 1998 was the story made public by a former Petrov commander.

In 2013, Petrov received the Dresden Prize for his contribution to world peace, but he did not see himself as a hero. "I only did my job," said Petrov.

Edit: Petrov actually died may 19th of this year, but the news just got out today.

one of the all time great Middleweights and truly the last of a golden era of boxing
A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, LaMotta fought professionally from 1941-54 and had a record of 83 wins, 19 losses and 4 draws, with 30 knockouts and was only put down on the canvas only once his career
96 is great age considering the punishment & beatings he took in the rring
RIP Champ

William G Stewart was pretty nasty to an uncle of mine once when he appeared on Fifteen to One. He told me that he made a joke and Strwart rounded on him and said it was his show and that he did the funny stuff. Went right down in my estimation after that. He was also the producer of Bless This House which starred Sid James on ITV in the seventies.
