Abandoned Souls (2010)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1674058/ A year after a mass prison break of seemingly infected weirdos a group of young folk rent a house by a lake in the woods and ... they hear a quaint local tale of an abandoned hermit's shack on an island where you have to knock on the door and listen to hear if the hermit replies ..... Not bad so far but I doubt there will be any major surprises. |

Louie Bluie: A documentary on musician Howard Armstrong a member of the last black string band, playing blues, hot jazz and country music. This is director Terry Zwigoff's (Crumb, Ghost World) first film made in 1985. A look at mandolin and violin player Howard Armstrong and his compadres of banjo players and guitarists. Armstrong is a colorful and engaging personality. The music is very much the stuff you'd expect to hear R. Crumb listening to. Those old blues '78s. On YouTube in five parts or you can watch the whole thing on HULU for free. 8.0. Last Vegas: A group of old childhood friends, (Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline) now in their late 60s go to Las Vegas to throw their pal a bachelor party. This is the trend we're seeing a lot. R.E.D. The Expendables. The Bucket List. Senior citizen buddy comedies. Truthfully I'd much rather see this type of casting than something with Robert Pattinson and Jesse Eisenberg trying to act older than they are. This was ok. It wasn't great but it was fun and entertaining. Douglas isn't really funny but then was he ever? He's mostly a straight man here anyway. Overall, it's a good time. 6.0 Carrie: Remake of Stephen King's 'Carrie'. You know the story. Girl's telekinetic powers manifest after being abused by a zealot mother and bullied at school by mean girls. Gets pranked at the prom and lays waste to everything. It's pretty much the same as the other versions. A few things are different but the framework is the same and you won't be surprised by anything other then the vfx. Chloe Moretz is a good choice. At least she's closer in age to the character than Spacek or Betis were. If you've read the book, you know they'll never do it accurately anyway. Julianne Moore is excellent as Carrie's unhinged mother. 5.0 47 Ronin: A band of samurai set out to avenge the death and dishonor of their master at the hands of a ruthless shogun. Keanu Reeves just remembered he's 1/32 asian so all of a sudden he's popped in a few asian movies. I guess it gives a boost to the asian film industry to have a Hollywood A- star in their movies. Some good action in this but it's still pretty slow and draggy. A shame because they gathered many of japan's elite actors as supporting cast to Reeves' usual wooden performance. Some of the other reviews I've read were pretty bad but this isnt as bad as they make it out to be but considering the budget (175 mil), you could expect better. 5.0 Man of Tai Chi: A man trained in the gentle art of tai chi is forced to fight in an illegal fight tournament. And speaking of Keanu Reeves. This is his directorial debut. He also stars as the evil corporate protagonist (a part he should have left to a better actor). Not a bad action movie. Not great. Ho hum story we've seen a million times before but some nice cinematography and very good action scenes. 5.5 |

Man of Steel (2013)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/ Been putting off seeing this for a while as to be honest the last Superman movie sucked but I have to say I'ts pretty good so far. I preferred the original Superman The Movie intro but it's nice to see Zod early on. |

Hold That Ghost (1941) The umpteenth time I've seen this A&C classic. Lou perhaps at his most terrified, Bud repeatedly trying to slap some sense into him, all while holed up in a gangster's spooky, broken down tavern. Lou and Joan Davis' "Blue Danube" dance is a highlight and how can you go wrong with the irresistibly beautiful Evelyn Ankers along for the ride? 10/10 |
