Windows 10?

I virtually always use Pale Moon nowadays and have it locked down about as tight as you can get. Adblock+, NoScript, Better Privacy, several other security extensions and allow almost no cookies. Most of the time I also sandbox it.

But every once in a while there will be some site that, for one reason or another, I must go to (never a porn site, I can always find the same thing elsewhere). Usually, in such a situation, I'll play around with the scripts and cookies until I find some combination that will allow the site to work without me getting into too much trouble. But some sites just won't do it. I'll futz around with every combination of cookies, scripts and ad blocking I can think of but the site still won't work.

So what I wind up doing is copying the URL of the page I need in Pale Moon, then opening IE and pasting the URL into IE's address bar. So far, the page has always worked in IE.

Not sure why this is. I know that not long ago, web designers sometimes made pages to only work in IE. So maybe thats what is going on here.

So if someone knows a work around to this problem I'm all ears. This situation is the only time I use IE.

I'd be testing out other browsers with the same rendering engine
rather than using IE any number

As for the windows 10 melodrama hard to see how the 53% who havent even upgraded from 7/7.1 to 8/8.1 would ever want to go to 10 now

The ending of support for XP which started in 2009 and finished in 2014
showed how you get people to move eventually...only 10% are still using XP

Not pointless badgering which doesnt address the main issue which is
most think W7 superior to W10 for the way they want it

MS scored a huge own goal when they tried to mesh everything under 1 umbrella
One can only imagine who they invited to test it before its launch
Nobody wanting a desktop or a mouse i'd presume.

Only one a day? Maybe I have a major misconception on the size of MS but that seems pretty low for an OS with over 90% of the consumer desktop market. No clue what percentage of the business market they have. Like they're not really trying to improve their code, find bugs and security flaws.

Let's say it.
Microsoft is on the decline.

There are several causes of course.

But one of them is their developping teams were over-staffed.
When Bill Gates and his successor realised it they suppressed posts (more than 10 thousand).

Of this ten thousand there were commercial staffs but also programmers.
These programmers did have to continue working.

Some of them went to Google and other companies which wanted their place under the sun.

So Microsoft's problems made other companies very happy.

It is no surprise Google is on the rise and Microsoft on the decline.

If you had certain competences, especially in programming, ask you this:
would you like to work at Google's or at Microsoft's ?

Thank you, Sir. I'm not a "browser junkie", but it's such an important tool I need to look into these and the recent changes in Opera which I last used about two years ago.

Context my friend. I was specifically looking at updates for Windows 10, not the entire Windows OS line.

To reiterate without being redundant: You have no control of the Windows 10 update process, unless you are running the Enterprise edition. Think about it. You're a college student working on a term project, which just happens to be due tomorrow and BOOM! You get kicked off because Windows 10 wants to perform an update. Or you own a small business. It's 8AM, you're getting ready to open your doors and BOOM! Your computers are locked up because Windows 10 wants to perform an update. Or the laptop that contains a vital business presentation you were working on is crashed because BLAM! Windows 10 decided to perform an update while you slept. All of these scenarios have been documented in technology trades, general media, blogs, and anecdotal sources.

The NUMBER ONE cardinal rule in change management for any business is you absolutely DO NOT submit system or application changes when you are facing a major deadline. Running payroll Wednesday night? NO CHANGES. Doing year-end financials? NO CHANGES until that's completed. Have a major product launch next week? NO CHANGES until after the launch.

Add to this the recent history of Windows Update failures which leaves much to be desired. It's ridiculous, but we are actually seeing patches to fix patches. As Mister 435843 pointed out, Microsoft has completely surrendered it's responsibility for testing and Quality Assurance. In place of this is an increasing reliance on telemetry (remote data gathering) and having users and business conducting such testing. What many see as Microsoft "spying" on them in my opinion is actually them using customer's computers to test their code while they gather installation or crash dump information from those systems. While many question the cost and complexity of converting to alternative platforms like Linux, they ignore the cost shifting that Microsoft is already engaging in with this paradigm change in software update testing.

The fact that you cannot choose which updates to apply, or when they will be installed makes running Windows 10 a complete roll of the dice. Even if each update runs flawlessly, you are still being delayed by the update process. And on a nearly daily basis. In addition to the aforementioned cost shift related to user's having to test each and every Windows Update, you now have the costs related to disruptions to the business by the new, arbitrary update process.

Functional issues (Edge, OneDrive, Continuum, Universal apps, software and peripheral compatibility) aside, the lack of control over the Windows 10 update process has to be the #1 strike against it's adoption. And the solution is entirely in Microsoft's hands. Just give us the same control over Windows Update that we've had under Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP. Let users control their personal and business computing priorities.

The whole "PC Revolution" was people embracing technology to put 24/7 computing power in their own hands, under their control, and at a price/performance point they could live with. The failure to recognize this brought down giants like IBM and Digital Equipment Corporation. I can't believe that I'm now watching Microsoft heading in the same direction. There's still time for them to reject the Dark Side and move back towards The Light.......

I just read Rick Danger's post and I think he is right.

And meanwhile we learn that Apple is going to communicate about a new version of the iPhone 5.
I said iPhone 5 and not 6 because some well-informed persons think Apple wants to please those who prefer the mobiles with smaller screens and is trying to keep them as clients and prevent them to go elsewhere.

I must admit I am impatient to know more.

But it seems the most important announcement to come should relate to the iPad which is growing old: the new iPad should have improvements in the keypad.

We all know Microsoft's "brownshirts" methods for trying to have us going to Windows 10 (and testing it by the same time).

It seems these bad methods are copied and used by other companies.
I can cite one in particular: Embarcadero.

They do all they can to push their clients to new versions of their products:
This goes from their update's policy to even impeding you from using one of their old tools, which you had paid for and want to reinstall on the same machine after a clean reinstall.

These methods are similar to those used by the mafia in Chicago in the twenties.

Some writers are defending Microsoft's Windows 10 update policy, saying they are not doing anything that Apple or Google aren't.

Funny. My Android phone does get frequent updates, several per week. But they only get triggered after I reboot my phone. And on certain occasions I am prompted for permission before the update applies. Most importantly the updates have an acceptable duration and they all work WITHOUT any intervention on my part.

If Windows 10 could deliver such performance clearly the vociferous criticisms would die down. So far, such performance has yet to materialize.

Yes, Google is doing it. That is an absolute truth and they have problems with Europe.

The legal affairs they recently had is a good testimony.

But if I had to choose between Microsoft and Google for a job I certainly would not choose the first.

Apple is also doing it but slightly and with more intelligence.

Funny that. In France Apple enjoys a lot of sympathy (in the cafés you see plenty of Apple notebooks but very rarely a Windows notebook) but it is Microsoft who gets the red carpet tratment when enterprises are concerned.

Good post! Thats one of the best explanations I've seen of the problems associated with the Win 10 update problems.

May have to use that elsewhere if thats OK (I would certainly attribute it to you, of course).
