Now streaming ,

A wildlife officer discovers the body of an 18-year-old woman on an American Indian reservation. When the autopsy reveals the girl was raped an FBI (Pretty hot looking) agent arrives to investigate. She teams up with said officer using him as a guide. They soon find out though that their lives are in danger while trying to solve the mystery of the teen's death.

So the (I've paraphrased) plot claims.

Yep for once I done perused the story first as not a particular fan of Renner.

Although fair play to him as he`s ok in this. Whereas everyone else is five times better (Naturally). Yet am finding this a deftly put together worth watching movie all the same

Agreed Max Saw it a while back and thoroughly enjoyed it. Renner's performance (Dahmer, the Hurt locker) is once again solid and the cold and desolate location just adds grittiness to the proceedings. The payback scene alone is worth the price of admission. Wind River kinda reminded me of Sean Penn's The Pledge for some reason.

Yesterday I saw Korean movie The handmaiden.

Happen on the thirties in Japan where a Korean woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress who is to marry her uncle, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her with a Korean guy pretending to be a Japanese count.

All performance are great, the story is really good and the different views are shown as the film progress, uncovering new information each time that twist the main plot.

Besides the female characters are really pretty.

HOSTILES

Some movies just grab a hold of you from it's first images and introductions to characters that may be coupled to moments that are so stunning and jarring that you know you are in for something great.
Such is the case with Scott Cooper's Hostiles
It's 1892 and Captain Joseph J. Blocker is ordered to escort a cancer stricken Cheyenne war chief Yellow Hawk and his family back to their tribal lands in Montana. He chafes at this because of his past with the chief, but the perilous journey begins.

The entire cast turns in amazing performances including:Christian Bale,Rosamund Pike,Wes Studi
Jesse Plemons, Adam Beach,Rory Cochrane,Ben Foster,Timothée Chalamet and Jonathan Majors.
The script drops facts about life in the late 1800's in the west to forgotten settlements to relations with Native Americans.
The character's that inhabit the film struggle to make peace with loss, grief, regret and remorse.
Past's that are haunting and then some hang on the faces of the men and women and this is beautifully portrayed by each actor.
The film is wonderfully shot from distant lightning strikes and mountain ranges.
There are moving moments of characters exprssing what haunts them, and there are some scenes of soul stirring violence

The film does meander a bit here and there and i started to feel the film's length and i wished some characters had been fleshed out a bit more

Hostiles is one of the best films i have watched in 2018 so far

Scale of 1-10 a 9

PROUD MARY

When i watched the trailer for Proud Mary months ago it immediately reminded me of the 2 Gloria films. The 1980 version starring Gena Rowlands and the 1999 version starring Sharon Stone, and thank you to BGOL board member RAZE for bringing to my attention that Proud Mary was written by the same writer of the later Gloria film
This is another movie released this weekend in which it's star is able to uplift the film out of it's generic blandness.
Taraji P. Henson as hitwoman with a heart of gold Mary Goodwin infuses her own talents and personality with that of Pam Grier via Coffy/Sheba Baby.
The cast does the best they can with the script and the dynamic between Henson and young actor Jahi Di’Allo Winston as Danny works really well.

There are a lot of over the top suspend disbelief action sequences
There's fun to be had and Henson is able hold it together in some scenes but i had hoped for more of a stronger story.
I know some are saying PM wasnt advertised or marketed in any bold way but i disagree because i saw several 3 minute TV spots for the film.
Now what angers me is the fact that the film had only 2 pre screenings nationwide and Thursday evening showings were hard to find
In the end i was entertained but not blown away

Scale of 1-10 a 6½

THE COMMUTER

I usually zone out and put the i dont want to be bothered expression on my face throughout my commute to work because usually if someone strikes up a conversation it ends with some kind of sales pitch or request for cash

In The Commuter Michael MacCauley (Liam Neeson) isnt asked for cash but is approached by a woman named Joanna (Vera Farmiga). Joanna tells Michael that there is a compartment on the train containing $25,000, plus another $75,000 in cash. She tells him he can have it as long as he helps find someone at the last stop at Cold Spring under the name "Prynne"
MacCauley is in a bit of a financial bind so he accepts and the topsy turvy commute begins.

The film starts off well establishing a familial and likeable foundation for MacCauley
There are some genuinely suspenseful moments.
The film starts to paint itself into a convoluted corner for absolutely no reason at all !!
Some of the action i bought into but other sequences are so badly edited, with sped up SFX which looked awful,so much so i began to laugh
It's funny how a film can have an actor that uplifts a movie from it's bad turns, and at the same time cast actor(s) that you just know are going to go down predictably sinister paths which lead to extremely predictable plot twists.

Some fun to be had and Neeson is great but wait for the DVD

Scale of 1-10 a 6½

Unhappy Oh dear

This

Is one of those movies where you can smell what deliciously might have been. Whilst having to swallow only mostly bland cliques instead.

Such a shame as I`m a big fan of the lead and V.E.F knows he does the very best that lackluster script allowed. Playing a mercenary hired to do a job that changes his life.

Won't go into details since I hadn't read the plot before streaming.
A plot that gives away what should be a surprise. A surprise that is the main story , and was as much as a curse as a blessing when the half hour strikes. Gawd and you find out what it is. What the daffy thing is
Up until then it`d been going pretty goodly.
Briefly raises it`s game at one hour fourteen.
Only to gently slide down into predictable territory again.
Seriously Fellow Forum Fellas if you haven't guessed the ending by the forty minute mark
I've got a Gold mine in Helmand Provence to sell you

I`d only recommend watching this if you fancy seeing something heavy on the cringe and groan factor. Oh and Xu Qing displaying absolutely zero screen presence whatsoever.

Am going to be generous all the same and award it a double. Purely for Hawke and Hauer`s fully committed performances

The Hunter (2011)

Trailer

Willem Dafoe plays the mercenary Martin David who is hired by the shady biotech company Red Leaf to hunt down the last remaining thylacine in Tasmania. Commonly known as the Tasmanian tiger, the animal is thought to have gone extinct long ago but recent reports of its sighting have come to the attention of the aforementioned company. David's task is to locate the animal, kill it, get a DNA sample and destroy its remains, so it can't be found by the competition. He is lodged in the home of the Armstrong family and befriends the kids Sass and Bike. Their environmentalist father has gone missing while their mother Lucy (Frances O'Connor) spends most of her time drugged with prescribed medication. Martin begins to care for the family but Red Leaf is growing impatient, waiting for the results.

Thanks to MaxJoker for bringing this to my attention. It has a small but thrilling plot with a superb Dafoe as its lead. The final scenes were very emotional.

Default Top 10 Best & Worst of 2017

I watch a lot of movies every year and 2017 was no different. So I've decided to rank the 10 movies I felt were the best and 10 others that I wished I never set eyes upon. Your opinions may not be the same and I'm okay with that.

So let's start with 3 movies that I thought were good, but didn't quite have what it took make the top 10....

IT - The best horror movie of 2017 is this one based off the Stephen King bestselling novel. You'll never look at red balloons or clowns the same way again.

The Lego Batman Movie - This spin-off from the 2014 hit is a hit unto itself and without the earworm of a song. Tons of cameos in brick form.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - I'll catch heck for not putting this in my top 10, but even after two viewings and looking at countless videos about it, I'm still left confused on a number of things.

Now the top 10

10) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - Bring back the original cast, mix in some new characters, add some awesome music cuts and you've got the movie that started the summer box office right.

9) Kong: Skull Island - The next entry in what is shaping up to be a movie universe of classic monsters (Godzilla in 2014 was first) and it is a action filled ride.

8) Beauty and the Beast - This lavish live-action remake of the 1991 animated feature holds true to that classic. Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast are just two of the outstanding performances in this great film.

7) Hidden Figures - The little known story of how three African-American women helped NASA and the fledgling US space program. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spenser & Janelle Monae play the mathematicians in this triumphant film.

6) Darkest Hour - Gary Oldman gives what I feel to be an Oscar worthy performance as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in this outstanding film. His famous "fight on the beaches" speech is like traveling back in time and watching the real Churchill speak. It's that powerful.

5) Dunkirk - Director Christopher Nolan has hit his pinnacle with this movie about the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of allied troops. What was very surprising was how little dialogue was in it. Instead the visuals and music score are used to tell this known, but little talked about, piece of WW2 history.

4) Logan - Hugh Jackman hangs up his adamantium claws in this fantastic send off to the Wolverine character. Along with Patrick Stewart as Professor X and newcomer Dafne Keen as Laura they must flee from a group called Reavers who want to kill Laura before she can cross the border into Canada.

3) Spider-Man: Homecoming - In this fantastic reboot to the Spider-Man franchise, Tom Holland gives an outstanding performance as a young teen Peter Parker. The story ties into the rest of the MCU as it starts out with a "video diary" of Peter and his role in the airport melee from Captain America: Civil War.

2) Wonder Woman - After her appearance in Batman v. Superman we, at long last, get the origin story of Diana of Themyscira. Better known to comic book fans as Wonder Woman. Israeli model turned actress Gal Gadot turns in a performance that is, if not Oscar worthy, at least one of the best of 2017.

1) Thor: Ragnarok - The best time I had at the movies this year was watching this fun and exciting entry into the MCU. We find out what Thor, Loki, & Hulk have been up to since they were last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. They all have to escape a junk planet and defeat death herself: Hela. Do they? I spoil nothing so go see for yourself.

I'll start of the worst 10 with three films that were bad, just not that bad.

Power Rangers - This reboot/remake of the 90's kids television show about 5 teens who become superheroes was to be the first of a five film series. After how disappointing this was, the other four are (hopefully) on hold.

Cars 3 - This movie should have never left the garage. It wasn't needed or wanted (at least by me) and would've done better going straight to video.

Life - This is Alien on the International Space Station. Pure and simple. I was actually making mental odds on who was going to live and who was going to die. Turns out I do that rather well.

Now the bottom 10....

10) Justice League - DC & Warner Brothers attempt to create a comic book universe to compete with Marvel crashed hard from its summer triumph Wonder Woman. The two things that saved it from being ranked lower was Gal Gadot & Jason Momoa (Aquaman).

9) The Fate (F8) of the Furious - Vin Diesel is back along with many of the original crew to try and stop a cyberterrorist. With car chases in NYC and a frozen sea in Russia, it checks all the action boxes. But the story ones are only partially done. And that is this movie's failing and place on the list.

8) Alien: Covenant - Trying to fix what Prometheus broke, this entry into the Alien saga is one of it's worst but better than Alien 3 & 4. It tried (and failed) to recreate the horror of the original film. It's time to put this entire series into cryostasis for a long, long time.

7) The Mummy - The first entry into Universal's "Dark Universe" of classic horror movie creatures is most likely it's last. Tom Cruise tries to bring his Ethan Hunt/Mission: Impossible character to another franchise and fails. I hope Brendan Fraser is having a good laugh. This remake cannot hold a candle to his 1999 action-fest.

6) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - And living men can' write them either. Once more Johnny Deep plays Captain Jack Sparrow in this sorry 5th entry into a series that was best left off at number three.

5) Transformers: The Last Knight - Another weak entry into a series that should have ended long ago. But I guess Michael Bay still had some explosives left and wanted to blow more stuff up. Maybe he should have paid more attention to a story that made sense.

4) Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - Director Luc Besson's (The Fifth Element) vanity project is awfully pretty to look at, but is just plain awful in story and execution. It was also a major money loser at the box office.

3) King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - Another retelling of how King Arthur came to be is total mess. With Vikings and prostitutes along with a greedy uncle who killed his dad (Lion King anyone?) to gain the throne it was also another money loser in 2017.

2) The Dark Tower - People have felt that Stephen King's Dark Tower book series would make good movies. Sadly this adaptation of the first of those books isn't it. Hopefully Mr. King has put the kibosh on making any more.

1) Geostorm - When I was watching this I honestly thought this was a second version of Roland Emmerich's 2012. But it wasn't. Instead the world has built a massive weather-control satellite and it is running amok. So they send Gerard Butler into orbit to try to fix it. Maybe they should have fixed the story first before releasing this garbage heap.

So, there you have it. My picks for the best & worst in film for 2017. These are just my opinions and yours may differ.

Testament

IMDB
Movie Trailer

The life of an American family from a small town in California is scarred after a nuclear attack. The mother and her three children have to live with the consequences of the radiations and the loss of the family's father.

The film was released in 1983. In my memory, I must have seen it in 85 or 86. I was a teenager back then but the movie left its mark on me. Never saw it again since last night. And guess what...it's a masterpiece.
Director Lynne Littman manages to catch every emotions, the good and the bad ones, in order to forge a story which is so sad and heartbreaking that it's very difficult, even for big guys, not to be moved by the images, the dialogues, the characters and their fate.
In this troubled times, Testament still has depth and sense and its themes are more than terrifying. Jane Alexander was nominated for an acadamy award as best actress. She's absolutely great in the role of a mother who's torn apart by hope, despair and resignation.
A great movie but you have to be prepared to be very depressed when the end titles come.

Outlaw Brothers

I've been into martial arts movies lately and this one kicks ass! It also has a crazy car scene which is kinda rare for the genre of that era! Highly recommended!

It's hard to track down but for the folks interested I might have something for you!
