Veteran British actor Robert Hardy has died.

Probably best known for his role as Siegfried Farnon in the long-running BBC drama All Creatures Great and Small, and as perhaps the definitive screen Winston Churchill, whom he portrayed numerous times for film, theatre and television.

More recently, Hardy gained recognition from a new generation for playing Cornelius Fudge in four Harry Potter films.

Sad to hear of the passing of Robert Hardy, I used to watch All Creatures Great and Small on a Sunday evening in the 80s and later enjoyed his performance in Hot Metal, the newspaper-based comedy where he played a Robert Maxwell type owner and his right hand man Russell Spam. Also enjoyed his appearances in Harry Potter.

Also sad to report the death of actor Hywell Bennett best known for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but rose to more fame as the lovable layabout Shelley and then coming back for The Return of Shelley. My favourite line from it is when he talks to a punk rocker and says "what do you think of thermo global nuclear war." To which the clueless punk says " oh yeah! they're a good group!" He was only 73.

Robert Hardy made a memorably reptilian turn as Charles Augustus Milverton in Granada TV's The Master Blackmailer from The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes.

Hywel Bennett - the first actor to make me cry.
I was 9 yrs old when i saw him in Where the Buffalo Roam, written by Dennis Potter & broadcast in Nov.1966 (The Wednesday Play). Afterwards my mother hugged me saying 'It's not real' but i still believed it was.
His best movie was The Family Way with Hayley & John Mills.

They showed a segment about him on the news, and what I loved was like Patrick Macnee he typified the classic English Gentleman personna on screen.
