Vic Faulkner - professional wrestler. 1944 - 2017
UK members of "a certain age" may remember the professional wrestling that used to be televised every Saturday afternoon through the sixties and seventies on "World of Sport". One of the great characters of that era, Vic Faulkner, has sadly passed away.
Born on the 14th July 1944 in Bolton, Lancashire, Vic was just 17 when he became a professional wrestler having been trained by his father and brother who were already established stars. He quickly became a fan favourite with his skilful wrestling and acrobatic style which was something that had not been seen by many fans at the time. On the 28th April 1962 Vic was to be given his first taste of national stardom when, in a televised bout from Colne, he wrestled Alan Colbeck. This was to be Vics first of many televised appearances which would last right up until the mid 1980s. As well as being a successful singles wrestler, Vic is just as well, if not more, known as a tag team wrestler with his older brother Bert (Royal). Vic and Bert often fought together as the Faulkner Brothers or the Royal Brothers and were a famous - and undefeated - wrestling Tag Team in the 1960s and 1970s. Vic worked as an Area Manager for one of the countries leading brewers and just like his wrestling career made a great success of this winning the Area Manager Award on three separate occasions. In retirement Vic continued to live in his beloved Bolton with his family. Vic Faulkner was fondly thought of by not only his fellow professionals but by his legion of fans. Vic Faulkner passed away suddenly on Thursday 6th July 2017 after suffering a heart attack. Vic was one of the greatest legends ever to lace up a pair of boots and step through the ropes, he entertained generations of fans and his passing is a great loss to the wrestling industry. Vic has left a legacy that will never be forgotten and neither will he. On a personal note I remember as a kid in the sixties, sitting down at four O'Clock most Saturdays with my dad to watch the wrestling on "World of Sport" on an old black-and-white telly. Vic Faulkner was a favourite of both of us and I shall be ever grateful for the memories of good times spent with my dad. Rest in peace, Vic..... and thanks for the memories. |

Wally Burr
Legendary voice actor and director Wally Burr has died at the age of 91.
Born June 2, 1926, Walter Story Burr was proud to boast that he was the youngest tank commander in World War II, sworn in as a Second Lieutenant just two days after his 18th birthday. Though he thought the war would be over in a matter of months, and that he was signed up for a short adventure, he saw five combat campaigns, and was promoted to captain by the end of the war. As a director, he was a famously cantankerous perfectionist, who worked his actors hard to achieve exactly what he demanded, right down to the syllable. Michael Bell jokes that being directed by Wally was what killed Orson Welles! Though spoken of only with fondness by the performers under him, Burr’s grueling eight-hour recording sessions were reportedly a large contributing factor to 1987 voice actor strike, with performers demanding that sessions be reduced to a four-hour minimum. https://tfwiki.tumblr.com/post/16283...duty-to-be-the |
