Good article on the BBC Website, their journalism is far superior to their television! BUT! Can anyone enlighten me as to who Amy Lofthouse is?

I used to have a smoke at half-time playing football too, and I had a teammate called 'Big Merv' (no relation), who would have a smoke and neck a beer at half-time, at around 11am. We were a highly professional outfit. |

I used to smoke whilst umpiring....but it was schoolboy cricket on Sat mornings, feeling hungover.

Thinking of that Viv Richards incident, can anyone recall any occasion when Richards was playing and Rob Bailey was the umpire

I'm pretty sure that the incident you're thinking of was in a Test Match somewhere in the West Indies in the days before neutral umpires. IIRC, it was right at the end of a day's play, and the Windies went up for a catch behind that at first the umpire did not give. Viv led the fielders in a huge, intimidating appeal and run at the local umpire, who then changed his mind and gave it out. Can't be sure, but Rob Bailey may have been the batsman on his only England tour.

Thanks for the relevant dates. My perverse SOH could just imagine Rob Bailey giving Viv Richards out caught behind (even in some friendly-non-firstclass/charity game) with a wicked grin.

Regrettably so. But I for one hope that their rebranding as 'Windies' is part of a programme to get them back up to something closer to the Windies of the 80s. Purely because trouncings aren't exciting, and I, personally, just want to watch a good game - (I daresay it will be abhorent to some I'm sure, but) I love cricket much more than I love any association with any side, national or otherwise - & I really, really wish that there's another Joel Garner etc in training somewhere... we've seen Bolt on the track, but he's retired now, when do we get to see the next Big Bird, Windies...? C'mon!
... of course, I think they launched their rebranding rather too early - ... always hire your bowling/batting coaches before you hire your management college kid!!
