Who's worth more ? A murderer or a "normal" person ?
Had a moral/ethical dispute with a few people.
Who's "worthy" to live a normal life after a violent behaviour? Is a man/woman "worthy" to live a normal life after doing cruel things to other human beings ? Examples : The serialkiller who kills 2 kids and their mother and father and then continue with other victims. The soldier who did the same in an attack somewhere in Vietnam-Afghanistan-Iraq-Sobibor>>(WWII) The father who kills his daughter's rapist. A man who stabs another man/woman just because he felt doing so at that time. And so on... Any ideas ? |

The worth depends on the society and his citizenship. I think From a US American point of view an serial killer from the USA is more worth then an any person in a third world country.
I would say any human has the same worth. If someone is a threat to the society he should live behind bars. But there it should be as dignified as possible. |

This is why countries have justice systems.Ideally, justice is served in addition to laws being upheld.
Here in the States, we take many things into consideration before dealing out punishment. State of mind Remorse Pre meditation, Etc. It's easy to say a man who murders for fun is equal to a vengeful father- both victims are dead right? Weighing everything, it's clear both parties were not in the same frame of mind. That's why there are different degrees of the same felonies. It's justice. |

i think if you ask most people if they would kill their innocent daughter, or niece, or a local kindergarten in return for the safety of the rest of their country they wouldn't be able to say yes, but if they would go and fight a war they don't really know the exact reasons is happening, in doing so killing lots of innocent people that have NOTHING to do with, they would say they would......... in the name of justice etc.....

I think we are all "worth" very much.
Killing another person seems to me to be the near definition of insanity. Yet, nearly all of us are capable of killing under the wrong set of circumstances. I hope there is more compassion than judgment in the world. This is my late night response anyway! (... I want to get political and feel responsible for senseless killing/murder done by "my" government. Am I a murderer too then? Is silence complicity? Wow! Glad I didn't go there.)

That said, I feel very strongly that every human being has innate value. I do not believe that any given person is worth more than another. However, there are times when a person's actions must be addressed harshly and said person should be removed from society whether permanently or for an appropriate period of time. I am personally against the death penalty and I don't own any guns, by the way. Imagine that!

Well, I respect your opinion Aphex, and I agree also that every human has an innate value. Unfortunately, that value is not always a constant. That's why I do own guns. It's unfortunate that we live in a society that needs them, but we do. I'm against the death penalty also, but I'm also against people being violated in their own homes. I think this is a very human stance. I love people, and I'm very open hearted, and I am very liberal as to what you're allowed to persue in life. But if you feel that entitles you to come and break into my house, I've got several Labs and a 38 that says you made a bad error in judgement.

Killing in the line of duty is easy , the hard part is living with your actions afterwards.
