Angry The Business Of 'Charity'.

Those student-types who walk around with vests or t-shirts who are acting on behalf of some charity. Yesterday, for example, I was approached by people wearing these from 'Unicef', 'Save The Children Fund', 'Oxfam' and not forgetting the ubiquitous 'Big Issue' seller.

They all offer the same rhetoric. "Did you know that there are poor/ill people/children from the third world who need your money/credit card details - and your donation CAN make a difference".

It would be interesting to see how many of these neo-hippy types that harass and in some cases intimidate people into donating actually donate themselves. I have no problem with people collecting for worthwhile causes. I have no problems with people getting work and off their arses to try to help others but pushing the guilt trip and harassing and pressurising people surely is not the best way?

I always say stick to one or two charities and no more. I donate a little to Cancer and Heart Research and any old soldiers with tins. Thats it. I havent got the cash to give to Save the Chickens or Warlord Aid (sorry Africa Aid.)

In these lean times these charities are getting increasingly aggressive and invasive due to the fact most people are tightening their belts.

Default Poppies and British Petroleum

Alas, right now my number one financial priority has to be Scoundrel. However, anything I can spare goes to the Lifeboat, even though I think it's a real cheek that HM Government has managed to palm this expensive and dangerous work off onto civilian volunteers when everywhere else in the world it is a Navy or Coastguard responsibility. I buy a poppy every year and I won't willingly spend tuppence in any shop who doesn't provide space for the annual British Legion appeal: it is quite common now for corner shops to make a mean-spirited gesture against the British Army by with-holding support from the British Legion and that is something I will never knowingly condone.

But I'm really posting now to talk about Lord John Browne and about British Petroleum. It seems Browne is being appointed to the Cabinet Office Board by Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude (a twerp): Browne's brief is to advise on making Whitehall "work in a more business-like manner." But under the leadership of Lord Browne, BP exhibited a horrendous cavalier attitude to safety. Apart from a huge refinery explosion in Texas in 2005 (15 dead, 180 injured), there has been a string of accidents at the same refinery afterwards. Browne presided over this company as CEO from 1995 to 2007 and did nothing to improve safety standards. In fairness he did address some of the company's worst environmental practices and he changed the company's official stance on global warming from obstinate denial to intelligent engagement with the debate. However, even though Tony Hayward is the man in the hotseat at BP now, Lord Browne created the situation in which BP are strongly suspected of systematically ignoring well founded safety concerns and violating safety rules which exist for extremely good reasons but which are expensive and eat into the shareholders' dividend. This sort of "business-like" thinking we can do without. Browne isn't one of "the great and the good" and it is very wrong that he even has a peerage, let alone a position in the UK government.

BTW all the whinging about President Obama holding BP to account and even about him insisting on refering to them as "British Petroleum" is wide of the mark. BP operates deep water oil rigs in the North Sea and there too their safety record is a serious concern. Do we British want to imagine the harm in our home waters if that oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico was in the North Sea instead? Frankly, it's Obama's duty (and that of his successors) to make life as unpleasant for BP as he humanly can until they sort out their shit, reform their entire safety culture and until they clean all this incredible mess up. If BP folds, I would expect the American government to nationalise BP's assets until the revenues these generate have bought and paid for the whole clean up. I cannot think this would be a good thing but at least it would focus the minds of the other oil companies on the importance of rigorous safety procedures when drilling in deep ocean waters.

The only charity I give to is RNLI. It operates, around Ireland & Britain and all the 100's of islands. If you're an angler like me, you feel safer when you know these brave men and women are out there.

I've done quite a bit of work for international development organisations and I have a list of four charities that I support, so I get mightily hacked off when some charity mugger assails me and gives me disapproval when I fail to support their particular cause. Of course, I could say something like "You can look down on me when you have spent several years working in some of Africa's poorest countries" but I'm far too well-mannered to do so. Tempting, though.

I quite enjoy those charitable (Although being paid and on commission) types coming up to me because in the main they are told to first say " Hello , can i ask you a question "

To which i reply " You just did "

Get`s them every time

Home Delivery Network

Last weekend I ordered some DVDs and CDs from Am*z*n. One Tuesday I received an email from them informing me that my order had been despatched and would be delivered by Home Delivery Network to arrive on Wednesday.

I duly waited in all day on Wednesday and, you've guessed it, they didn't deliver my order. Instead they put a card through my letterbox saying that as no-one was in they have taken my parcel back to their depot for safe keeping. I was in, but they didn't knock on my front door or use my doorbell.

On this card it stated that I could visit their website to rearranged the delivery. I duly did this and requested that it should arrive today.

Again I waited in all day and it did not arrive! This time there was no card pushed through my letterbox. I then used the other option which is to call their automated delivery service line. I have now rearranged the rearranged delivery to arrive on Tuesday.

Grrr, this has really annoyed me.
