You right that was a good film. If you liked it another I would recommend is Walkabout. We don't have a track record of embracing unflattering views of ourselves, which is why both films did poorly at the box office. We prefer to present ourselves to the world as Crocodile Dundee or Mad Max.

It's complicated to explain but basically it has to do with the ANZUS treaty. We are providing moral justification to the US being in Iraq and Afghanistan just as we did when they were in Vietnam. In return, we will expect GI Joe to come here and die for us in the advent of China becoming militarily aggressive.

I didn't think it was necessarily unflattering.

The guys have a drunken lost weekend, but they're good guys. I think that's the point of the film. It _is_ very hard on the female characters, but I took the message of the film to be: "don't be a stuck up prick, and your mates will see you through, no matter how much of a mess you make."

Its certainly not Paul Hogan throwing "a shrimp on the barbi for ya", but these are surprisingly nice guys.

If you compare it to the US, our backward regions aren't nearly so accomodating (either in film or real life). Consider that "wake in fright" is from about the same time as "Deliverance"

Are we talking about the same film? The point of the one I saw, is that to gain acceptance, you have to be a drunken, obnoxious, latent homosexual arsehole.

Same movie -- I guess I saw it differently.

Sign of a good film, that its read differently by different viewers.

Default Australians to get more education

Catwalk beauty Julia Gillard has decided that young Australians must learn Asian languages. Here she is:

Default If you lived in Australia...

...well, the chances are you'd be fat. Look what they're saying about each other

"We're a nation of fatties, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported this week, with the news that two out of three adult Australians were overweight or obese"

Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/societ...#ixzz2Asr2FjpT

But that can't be right, surely? I can't remember seeing a single fat person when I was there

Maybe they got their numbers wrong...

Yes, that's it. If the accountants can't count, why should the statisticians be better

"NSW has moved from deficit to surplus due to "totally unacceptable" errors in its accounts, the Auditor-General says"
