Rebuilding movie files from split archives
On a lot of sites you see scenes that have been split up because of file size limitations. Is there a standard tool used to rebuild these movies from parts?
I tried downloading a split up scene awhile ago and used a freeware tool to try rebuilding it, but I just got some wierd errors about corrupt files and some other missing stuff. Is there a tutorial/link around here that can explain some of this, and how to do it, and what tools to use?

Just search the help section for winrar or hjsplit, they will do the job if you are using windows.

I'll try hjslpit, don't WinRAR files have another extension besides RAR if the actual RAR file has been broken up though?

Should look like a little pile of books and say xxpart1 xxpart2 etc, always make sure they are in the same folder when opening them.

Yes, I know what RAR icons look like, but using hjsplit, don't you extract what's inside first before trying to join them?
Maybe that's what I've been doing wrong.

Maybe you could give an example of what you are trying to extract, sometimes we can get confused with terminology

What I mean is say I have a RAR file, containing part of a movie file, labelled movie_part1.xxx (where the xxx could be whatever file extension).
Do I extract these OUT of the RAR files, and then use a file splitter/joiner to join the extracted files, or do I join the RAR files together directly, WITHOUT extracting them? Doing the last makes no sense to me. But that is my impression of what you were saying. I am not sure if the various movies that you see around the net are split with tools that require that specific tool to rejoin them or not.

Extract the split scenes from the rar files first.
Then you need to join the individual split scenes with video joining software. I haven't done this in quite a while, but I do remember that it only worked well some of the time.

I'm wary of trying this again, and was hoping for someone to illuminate a path through the video wilderness.

If you have something like "Movie_part_1.rar" and "Movie_part_2.rar", click on the "Movie_part_1.rar" to open the unpacker window. You should see the full unpacked size of that file. Compare it to the file size mentioned in the post where you got the links from.
If your movie is 700MB and it shows something like 350MB, it means the software only recognized one file or the movie is indeed split into various files. If it shows the full 700MB, it means the software noticed that it should combine all the parts and you should end up with one movie file. UNLESS: You mean actual split movie files. Something like "Movie_1_of_2.avi" and "Movie_2_of_2.avi". Then you can either combine it them with a shell command that I can't remember, or use any video joiner software, preferably lossless. |
