Hmm, but what about the average Donald?
Dunedin is cold from time to time-but nowhere THAT bad-in fact it is often warmer than Christchurch in the winter (fewer frosts for a start)-being a harbour city it benefits from the moderating effect (such as it is) of the ocean. We (I'm a Dunedinite originally) do have a few winter events that certainly can bring a tear to all 3 eyes....the polar plunge at St Kilda beach being one (another custom they have in Antarctica too!)-and being a university town there is also the 'student factor' to contend with....I do concede though-the Dunedin winters can be miserable-as distinct from merely cold...

Naked romps and playing silly buggers in winter are not limited to the deep southern hemisphere-the Germans, Finns and Scandinavians are quite keen on them as well....

Hehehe! Where do you think the southern hemisphere got the idea? From the penguins?

No, they got it from the northern hemisphere, of course

But from what I've read, they don't understand why anyone does it -- no one would, if they don't experience real cold. I'm told they think we're mad

The idea is that you get real hot in a sauna, usually between +60 and +100 depending how you like it. Then you go out in the cold and dip in a hole in the ice. You get in slowly, never jump in. Then you get out and are close to frozen, but when you get back in the sauna and the blood starts to flow again, that's when you get the great feeling. All you see is dumb grins on everyone's faces, but that's what it's about

A question for members resident within Australia: would you order a single-flavoured double scoop from Ben & Jerry's ice creams?

Aah-but us hardened kiwis and aussies don't bother with the sauna side of the process-it's solely pure shock effect on entry followed by shivering on emergence....

Maybe that's what palo meant when he wrote we don't understand?--we don't understand about the sauna.
