assuming you're using VLC (and if not, why not? )

right-click and Open With, for an individual file.

right-click, Preferences, and then change the Opens With default app to VLC for a permanent change.

on a Mac the default app is changed in right-click, Get Info

In addition to the useful advice that Jazz67 offers -- and for anyone struggling with media, VLC is always the first place I go -- with SWF media, it makes a lot of sense to do a batch conversion of these files, as they're a bit of a nuisance.

Shockwave was an Adobe media presentation format, output from Flash (originally developed by Macromedia, who were bought by Adobe) -- the concept of it was sort of "a PDF for web media"; if you go back 15 years or so, that's what the best looking websites were coded with.

. . . but a ton of work on coding websites, and increasing security problems with Flash encoded websites, meant that it is now obsolete.

SWF content can include lots of things -- its a presentation format, but in the case of old erotic material, what's actually going to be _ in _ that SWF, is actually likely an MPEG-1 or possibly and MPEG 4 media asset embedded in the SWF (MPEG-4 was introduced in 2001). If the SWF material includes animated vector graphics from Flash (and it could,

If you plan on working with a lot of these -- consider doing a batch conversion, using Handbrake for example. You don't want to re encode, just to effectively "pass through" the MPEG content to an MPG or MP4 file. I'd do this with Handbrake, but there are a lot of choices.

An *.mpg or *.mp4 file is going to be a lot more flexible in the future.

It is a very big headache to convert swf into mp4. As you know Adobe doesn't support swf anymore, and Microsoft removed swf built-in tools in Windws 10 & Windows 11. VLC NOT ALWAYS is able to watch swf files. You can extract built-in video but if it is a vector graphic it is a impossibly. Therefore all of convertors PLAY swf video and RECORD them as mp4. In some situations it would be helpful to use freeware Swivel but it generate a video with dimensions are MUCH greater than original video. Commercial ThunderSoft has conflicts with some sound cards. Commercial Bigasoft return non-proper video sizes. More or less good result you can get with commercial Xilisoft

I tried to de-compile original swf file using Adobe Macromedia Flash but it swf password protected and you don't know a password it is your choice to use commercial de-compiler which not always return a proper result. I used one of them and tried to open a de-compiled swf using Adobe Macromedia. As result I got a mess. If you try to convert swf into video using old Macromedia into avi or new Adobe After Effects into mp4 you will get a video without sound. It is an old Adobe bug but they still refuse to accept and fix it. That's it.

By the way if you a Linux guy there were an old application which extract a raw video from swf and then you can use a bash script to convert this raw video into mp4. You can still find this script at internet but I didn't try it. I hsome small swv videos I and converted them into mp4 using trial version of Xilisoft.

I do it in Handbrake, as I mentioned above. You may have to download an additional tool -- I didn't, I think it depends on whether there's any vector content in the SWF container, instructions at
